Rob Ambrose Leads Homegrown Tigers To FCS Semifinals
When Rob Ambrose took over as the head coach of Towson University's football team, he wanted to continue the mission of his predecessors -- Carl Runk, Phil Albert and Gordy Combs. He wanted to bring as many of the best local and statewide players to the school as possible.

Ambrose, though, has one advantage over the three coaches who preceded him -- the state of Maryland is now exploding with Division I-ready high school players.

"In the last 10-15 years, youth football in any way, shape or form, has grown tremendously in the area," said Ambrose, who was named Towson's head coach Dec. 27, 2008. "It's got a lot to do with the Ravens, and it has a lot to do with the overall commitment to the sport. And it's paying dividends nationally in how these kids are perceived. In some cases, they leave here and go to very large institutions."

In many cases, though, they stay home, attending either Towson and Morgan State in the Football Championship Subdivision, or Maryland and Navy in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Of the 93 players on Towson's roster, 46 went to Maryland high schools and 23 are from Baltimore City or Baltimore-area schools.

"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."
