He's right...

Who cares? Really? This is such a non issue. He doesn't want to "honor" Mandela. That's his right as an American.

People are all about free speech/expression until it's something they don't agree with.

The NY Yankees will honor Mandela with a plaque in Monument Park to remember his visit to Yankee Stadium. There is one for the Pope as well for his visit.

The ribbing that Mandela is getting in Heaven right now from the old Yankees must be something like this:
Rizzuto: Holy Cow look who just walked in!!!
Dimaggio: Did he bring donuts?
Gehrig: Hey Elston, he's from your tribe!!!
Howard: Shut up cracker.
Mantle: At least he's not a wop.
Martin: Mickey, I'm gonna punch you.
Munson: Why is he in here with us?
Hunter: I heard there will be a plaque in Yankee Stadium honoring him because of a visit.
All: WHAT?!!!!!!
Ruth: I had to hit 714 home runs to get a plaque!!!!! He gets one for a visit?
Steinbrenner: This is what happens when I'm not calling the shots anymore. :ohno:

He's representing an office and all the people in his jurisdiction not to mention the law. Not exactly a cut and dry free speech issue - although I do see the techicality of his argument. Cops should stay away from making political statements...if that's what he's doing.

I love how the media has stirred up the libs over the SC sheriff. Guys like Jon eat that stuff up.

The President cannot order a sheriff to do anything at all, and the guy can make whatever judgment he feels is proper concerning the flying of the flag in front of his building. He has a definite point on the purpose of rendering honors re: the flag.

How does he stay away from making a political statement in this situation?
- By lowering the flag for someone who was not an American citizen.
- By not lowering the flag for someone who was not an American citizen.

Either action is making a statement. It's his office, his call. If the people don't like it, they can vote him out in the next election.

Good point, but he chose to make a public announcement about it and post it on Facebook. Are all those agencies who did lower it without a public proclamation violating the law? Are they making a political statement too? Did anyone really take notice of their statement?

I would have done the same actions as Mandela. Someone oppresses you, kill them and their children. War isn't about style points...the goal is to hurt them, and if they don't give up, kill them. So, props to Mandela for fighting the good fight. :thumb:

However, I would not expect to be honored as a man of peace, because that would be a lie. Same with Mandela. 40 years from now will we call Abu Sakkar a hero if he spends time in jail and comes out preaching a cease fire to protect his Sunni people and gets elected as President of Syria?

Mandela didn't get all lovey and peaceful because he wanted to save white people...he did it to prevent bloodshed among his people. Despite what everyone is saying, South Africa still has huge problems as blacks are still attacking whites and trying to drive them from the land. And the government is often looking the other way because the numbers don't add up to make it worth a brutal crackdown. Indeed, it is still a fragile alliance, and it might not last. There will be hatred and violence for generations. Cripes, we're 150 years past slavery, and we still have clowns like klean and dal who continue to blame whites while not outwardly condemning the actions of violent blacks. That is similar to the odd silence from world wide Muslim communities regarding Muslim atrocities.

As to some of the other things that have been posted here, yes, America is/was/will be a terrorist nation...it is simply a matter of winners writing history. We do what other nations do...we act in our own self interest. And we certainly kill people, including women and children, that get in our way. That's the price of business. Everyone is a Conk when it comes to their own interests.

Mandela event signer was in group that burned men
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A relative and three friends of the bogus sign language interpreter at the Nelson Mandela memorial service say he was among a group of people who accosted two men found with a stolen television and burned them to death in 2003.

They told The Associated Press that tires were placed around the men's necks and set ablaze. Unlike two other suspects who went to trial in 2006 for the killings, the four said on Monday that Thamsanqa Jantjie never did because authorities determined he wasn't mentally fit.
