Walter Payton Finalists announced

Post by EWURanger »

How many times did Adams get pulled from a game in the 3rd or 4th quarter, or rely on the running game heavily on the second half because the game was in hand? I know that EIU was often up 21+ points at half or early in the 3rd quarter so Garoppolo was pulled for a back-up or the running game was used. Not that it should have a huge impact (if any) on the WP Award, but would Adams' stats be as close to Garoppolo if Jimmy played more full games? (Kinda of a "duh" question, but something worth considering.)
There were a few games where Adams did not play in the 4th qtr, or his numbers would be even bigger. In the Cal Poly game, he didn't play much of the second half.

I will guarantee Adams does not win the Payton UNLESS a miracle happens and EIU gets ousted this week. Otherwise, it goes to Garropolo. And even as an Eastern fan, I have no problem with that. The kid will be drafted early and is so instrumental in his teams' success that his importance really can't be measured.

Voting is done numb nuts. They've already chosen the wpa winner. It based off reg season only. You think they only finished voting for those not in the top 3? That's how they know whos in the top three, they voted already. Bet 100$ that trophy is in VA's hand.

Yeah, I can think of 6 games where JG came out in the 3rd or 4th, so he and Adams were in similar situations

As for team relying only on him, I guess having Lora (who was a top 10 WPA finalist the last two years) and a running game that brought over 2100 yards doesn't matter. EIU was a solid team, not one-dimensional like you want to assume. Look at the stats, folks. Granted, If JG was not there we may have lost a game or two more! but I bet EWU would have lost more without Adams. They are very similar.

instrumental? ;)

IMO there's not much separating Garoppolo's and Adams' stats. I expect Garoppolo to win partly because if it's a push, the voters are more likely to give it to the senior rather than a soph, and possibly more likely to favor a school that hasn't had several award winners in recent years. I'm guessing he'll win over West because in a close contest the QB will probably get more votes than the RB.

All the voting happened at the end of the regular season. Playoffs don't matter one bit.

IMO there's been a bias these last few years towards QBs in the nomination process and media coverage.

The votes are already in, which is too bad, because anyone who watched West and TU destroy EIU last night knows West deserves the award.

JohnStOnge wrote:That guy from South Dakota State not being on the list is a travesty unless there's some rule about it having to be a senior.

I've seen the Towson back play and at least based on just seeing each play one game I'd rather have the guy from South Dakota State on my team. Now the game I watched was a game Towson lost (Villanova) and in which the Towson guy was held to 61 yards rushing. And the first time I saw that South Dakota State guy play was this past weekend against Northern Arizona where he got 249 rushing yards. But he just flat looks a whole lot more explosive and dangerous than the Towson guy. It's hard for me to believe that if the two were playing on the same team that the South Dakota State guy wouldn't be starting over the Towson guy.

In any case how could he NOT be on the list of finalists? IS the list limited to seniors only?
Could be the SDST RB was playing a crap team in a crap conference, and West was playing 'Nova, a team that boasts an outstanding D in a great conference.

Proof? West's record setting performance in the quartefinal game last night against an overrated crap team from a crap conference.

West will be playing on Sundays...SDST guy? Eh. Maybe.

The redshirt sophomore from Pasadena, Calif., owns a pass-efficiency rating of 187.1 that ranks fourth in FCS history, and his 51 touchdown passes this season are third all time nationally. Throw in his rushing total of 491 yards and Adams ranks fifth in FCS history with 4,794 all-purpose yards this season

To me its obvious EWU qb Vernon Adams deserves the Walter Payton Award.
