n my grade school, it was never explained to us that many of the great stories in the bible we were taught - those that appeal to kids or lovers of violence/sex - were allegory or myth. I doubt they made that clear to you either.
I don't know about all that but every Catholic Bible I've ever seen has a preface to each book that talks about stuff and pretty clearly gives you the impression that you're not supposed to look at it as a literal history. Like I just went and grabbed a Catholic Bible my brother gave me as a gift (not the genius brother, my other one) and here is a quote from the preface on the book of Revelation:
Symbolic descriptions are not to be taken as literal descriptions, nor is the symbolism capable of being pictured realistically.
There's a lot more there but I don't want to type too much.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Ok, since we started with Noah, which is in Genesis, here is some language from the preface of the Catholic Bible my brother game me on Genesis:
To make the truths contained in these chapters intelligible to the Israelite people destined to preserve them, they needed to be expressed through elements prevailing among that people at that time. For this reason, the truths themselves must therefore be clearly distinguished from their literary garb.
I could go on but there is all KINDS of stuff in that preface telling the reader not to take the stories as literal history. It's not like fundamentalist protestantism at all where people say that everything in the Bible is literally true.

BTW, this Bible was given to me in 1982. So this is not some approach that just arose yesterday.

I'm not sure why Mark and D1B insist we were taught these stories as literally true. I was never taught to believe them literally. I remember being taught that the stories represented a message.

In fact, we went to the Youth Mass with our children last Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, and the Gospel reading made reference to the story of Noah. When the children (k-5th grade) gathered around the altar for the homily, the priest specifically said we don't know how much of the story is true, but the story is important for its lessons -- that we should be prepared for the coming of the Lord and be rightful at that time.

In the case of a narrative of
events, the question arises as
to whether everything must be taken accordi
ng to the figurative sense only, or whether it
must be expounded and
defended also as a faithful record of what
happened. No Christian will dare say that the
narrative must not be taken in
a figurative sense.
So Jesus dying and coming back to life and all that bullshit should be taken literally? Hard as it may be, but you can actually build an ark and fill it with beasts. The Jesus shit cannot ever be done.

Who decides what should be taken literally?
Still waiting. St. Wronge, ask your genius brother.

No shit, JSO. The problem is that are millions of "christians" that follow the church blindly, believe everything in the bible, regardless of the fact that they haven't read it. Then they pick and choose which laws to follow. They ignore the law of not touching a dead animal, shaving and wearing a cloth made of 2 or more fabrics.

Joe has an interesting view of the world. He is not amazed that people are Buddhists (after being persecuted), or Jews (also prosecuted). He is not amazed at the quickness of spread of Islam (and it surviving the schism within that religion). He is not amazed that there are several TV shows that thrive on beliefs about ghosts, mermaids, bigfoot...you name it. He is not amazed that a bunch of people continue to vote for Marion Berry, Rangel, or any number of lying sacks of shyt.

However, Joe is amazed (and calls it a miracle) that a bunch of superstitious, uneducated people followed a story about a man who some say was the son of god. And yet he is not amazed that some folks would take that story, turn it into a form of control, and use it to wipe out any forms of competition.

Amazing.
Joe, any comment here?

I remember Sister Jean Marie telling us in the 2nd grade that the Bible stories were true. That's why. Hmm. Interesting. Someone having an experience different then you. I have never been told the stories were symbolic. Maybe they did things different in the 1990's and in the South but them the facts, bub. :coffee: :thumb:

Of course, I grew up, learned to think for myself and knew the stories, all of them including the "passion of the christ" were fiction.

No one gave us the "the stories of the bible are complete bullshit" disclaimer from grades 1 through 8 at our school. MOF I remember our priest talking bout the farce of a movie that came out claiming to find pieces of the Ark, and saying it proves the biblical account is true. Things may have changed, but I doubt it.

My Very First Noah's Ark Playtime Review

I am participating in a Kregel Publication Blog Tour for My Very First Noah's Ark Playtime Activity Book with Stickers by Lois Rock. This 16 page activity book is for very young children that teaches the Noah's Ark bible story. As the title suggests, it's an interactive book with many stickers that help teaches this popular story. Children can develop their pre-reading skills in the areas of letter sounds and counting skills. They are also working on their fine motor, identification and matching skills. So, as they learn about God and His promise to Noah they are also working on their cognitive and manipulative skills! Great for spiritual and academic learning.

For a parent or teacher who selects this activity book, it's mostly to teach the children about this popular bible story. What I do appreciate about this book is that it did NOT include God's displeasure at the pervasive wickedness of mankind and how he intended to wipe them from the face of the earth. This book is geared towards young children who may become fearful of God's action of flooding the earth which meant many lives ended. God's intent was not to destroy man but to destroy the wickedness and sin. This is a hard concept for little ones to understand, therefore, I appreciate how this book glossed over that truth. Older children may wonder at what happened to all the other people but younger ones probably will not.
This is a major indoctrination method used by the catholics and most religions. Disneyize the stories for the kids and make them fearful of god but love jesus.

It aint the message, it's the trillions spent to indoctrinate children.

Yea, Cluck didn't understand the point (is that so unusual).

My point wasn't that Christians were persecuted and other religions haven't. My point was that Christianity was persecuted within the very community Christianity took root.

Buddhists have been persecuted, but Buddhism first took root in a society which was tolerant and even affirming of its beliefs. Buddhists have been persecuted by outsiders.

Muslims have been persecuted, but Islam first took root in a society which affirmed its beliefs. Again, Muslims have been persecuted by people outside their society.

Jews have been persecuted, but even Judaism took root in a society which affirmed its beliefs. Jews have been persecuted by those outside their society.

Christianity first took root in a society which made membership a capital crime.

So there's my answer for you.

Now, let me use this to help explain my answer to Cluck, so he''ll understand:

Joe, while I think you are mistaken or perhaps unaware of how your indoctrinators are teaching your children, I am aware your church has pretty much given up defending most of the nonsense in the bible.

Instead it has spent the last couple millenniums myth-crafting, rewriting and editing - the results producing a convoluted Mount Everest of catholic bullshit, half truths, flat-out lies. And the only people who can rationalize/understand it are scholars of the highest degree or fanatics or both.

Why would a decent, intelligent god do this?

Makes perfect sense yet you're so enlightened that you don't see the very stain that possesses not only your soul but all of mankind's souls. You have cut yourself off from the very source that can save you because of your own pride, which is the greatest sin any man can commit. God is not done with you. However I am. Someday you will remember my words. Goodbye to this board forever. I have bigger fish to fry. You my friend need to heed the words of God.
