Creationists Lose Fight Over Texas Textbooks

......and Texas schoolchildren win!!!

:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

This afternoon, the Texas State Board of Education gave its final approval to a set of biology textbooks that include scientifically sound teachings about evolution, rebuffing a campaign by creationists to include “biblical principles” in science texts. However, the board delayed its approval of one of the books until a board of experts reviews the complaints of anti-evolutionists.

The Texas Freedom Network, which has been fighting to keep science in the state’s science textbooks, called the vote a “huge win for science education” and noted that “throughout the adoption process, publishers refused to make concessions that would have compromised science instruction on evolution and climate change in their textbooks.” People For the American Way joined TFN earlier this year to deliver 300,000 petitions to the school board urging them to reject attempts to insert creationism into science texts.

Creationists on the school board, in a last-ditch attempt to delay the process, are still holding up one biology book. TFN reported yesterday:

The adoption of the Pearson textbook was held up because an anti-evolution activist appointed to serve as an official state reviewer alleged that it included nearly two dozen factual errors. Some of the alleged “errors” focused on relatively small and almost trivial details — such as whether scientists estimate the age of Earth as 4 billion or 4.2 billion years old. But most dealt with evolution or related concepts and essentially repeated many discredited claims anti-evolution activists have been pushing for decades.

Silly zealots.

Doesn't Texas dictate what goes into textbooks for pretty much the entire country? Seem to remember something about one of the Bush brothers being involved and replacing passages regarding Thomas Jefferson with deifying Reagan...or some such thing.

So let me get this straight...

This is a thread about the Texas board of education installing a science book free of biblical literature, with a little Reagan/Bush hyperbole thrown in to keep it alive....

But basically it is about how science wins in Texas.

I'm failing to see the progressive talking point here

The talking point is:
1) Here we are late 2013
2) Common everyday science still has to do battle with nonsense
3) Those who would actively politicize gibberish as truth are still considered valid
4) We are a declining model trapped in our own tar pit

Once again, I don't really give a s*** what people think about evolution and creationism. An engineer or physicist who is a creationist is ultimately more valuable human capital than some conservation biologist or zoologist who is vehemently against any sort of creationism in schools. Evolution is non-existent on the MCAT or any any medical or biomedical science programs because it's just not a very useful science when it comes to medicine and technology. That's the politically incorrect truth that Bill Nye and other Darwin fanboys don't seem to understand.

It's funny how people get riled up and talking about international competitiveness and being pro science when talking about creationism, while they don't have one tenth the outrage about physics instruction in high schools being crappy while computer science and engineering are practically non-existent. Meanwhile, Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology are advising relaxing math standards because math classes are to haaaaaaaaaaaard and they keep kids from wanting to learn engineering and physical science. :dunce:

No, the point is-

There are idiots everywhere who have always chosen mumbo jumbo in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, and many times in the past their beliefs have prevailed.

You're right- it is 2013, and even in Texas the creationist minority lost the battle with science. This isn't what I would call being considered valid

So what you're saying is
Think of Texas as Spain in the Late Dark Ages (Post-Enlightenment, circa 1500ad)
Just now extracting themselves from the clutches of total ignorance

I went to Catholic HS, my wife went to Catholic school her whole life. My kids go to Catholic school. We all learned about Evolution. What is the malfunction here? Who is it exactly that teaches Creationism over Evolution? Is it a specific sect? I don't understand anything about the Protestant side of things, too many reason, too many groups, too little time or energy.

We've been over this before, Chizzy. Just about everyone has some opinions that go against mainstream scientific consensus. It's not limited to the conservative, uneducated, or the religious.

1. People insist organic foods have health benefits when there is no evidence that they do.
2. People won't vaccinate their kids because they think it will cause autism.
3. People want to ban genetically modified foods (a terrible idea) because they think it will eat their brains and kill the polar bears or something.

At least being a creationist you won't be responsible for an outbreak of whopping cough or food prices needlessly going up. And you better believe there are people fighting against removing outdated information about GMOs in textbooks and replacing it with more accurate information. Not holding my breath waiting for those people to be mocked in the same way creationists are.

Why is all the outrage at how western civilization is going down the toilet because of "anti-science" saved exclusively for creationists? The sacred cow of evolution.

What is it with you and Clitz in this thread? Is is irrelevant hyperbole day or something and I didn't get the memo?

There's a big difference between denying evolution and this:

"The review of social studies curriculum (covering U.S. government, American history, world history and economics) comes up every 10 years, and 2010 is one of those years. The unelected education "experts" proposed their history revisions, such as eliminating Independence Day, Christopher Columbus, Thomas Edison, Daniel Boone and Neil Armstrong, and replacing Christmas with Diwali."

Opposition to the deletion of important historical figures and events in our past and opposition to teaching evolution in schools might have some common supporters (although a much smaller group than you hand wringers might think) but they are not the same thing.

I feel like the host on SNL's "The Point is Moot" trying to get a coherent argument out of Jesse Jackson.

Here's where you completely wiff... Pay Attention:
Because the old Testament says some nonsense about THE creation
We are today still debating creationism in the face of actual observable science

The Point:
If the Old Testament said some nonsense about Electricity or Water
We'd be debating that water doesn't actually boil at 212 degrees and when it freezes it actually because of Moses not observable molecular behavior / or we'd be debating the nature of Electrons in relation to the word of God

The points you are making above are because of BAD popular INFORMATION
Similar to urban legend - and once debunked disappear forever

Yet, 2000 years later we're still discussing Creationism vs. observable science
And with Evolution when new information comes along - the evolution debate will include the new info
Not Stand fast against the New observed data

Right..? :coffee:

Evangelicals. Those that believe in a literal view of the Bible. ie Adam and Eve were real, Eve created from Adam's Rib, etc.
