Biggest Rivalry in College Football?

Post by SuperHornet »

ESPN was asking this question on FB. Naturally, a LOT of people were on the Michigan-Ohio State bandwagon, and predictably those bashing that were SEC fans. One person DID bring up Michgan-App State, and another said Florida-Georgia Southern. I was impressed with those who said Army-Navy.

I was the only one to mention Sac State-UC Davis. I wonder if that will get ANY response. Surprised nobody said anything about the Brawl of the Wild, the Civil War, the Big Game, USC-UCLA (some DID mention USC-ND), Yale-Harvard, or Lehigh-Lafayette....
Spoiler: show
(Of course, I only looked at the first page of the over 6K responses....)

I would have to say.

Alabama Auburn
Michigan Ohio State

Those schools ESPECIALLY ohio state and bama, have huge fan bases. Those are the top two with osu um probably the biggest.

Are you insane!?

Nobody cares about cat/griz outside of montana.

USC ucla is not a big rivalry most USC fan are extremely fair weather and only alumni are fans of ucla.

Az/Az state???? They're both garbage. Almost every year. Again nobody cares outside the state. Maybe not even that.

EWU / Idaho state??? What??? They're not rivals, on top of that, it ain't a rivalry if the stadium ain't sold out bro. When's the last time Holt arena was sold out to see EWU? What about ever???

I'd agree on both Ohio State / Michigan and Alabama / Auburn as probably being the two biggest. They really seem to hate each other and all of those teams have massive fanbases.

The only reason I might say Ohio State / Michigan is bigger is due to the fact that the SEC teams seem to stick together, so you don't have Alabama fans vigorously rooting for some no-name out-of-conference team to beat Auburn just because it's Auburn. However, you do see that with Ohio State and Michigan.

While WSU people think UW is their biggest adversary, UW probably hates Oregon worse. In fact, you could make a very valid argument that everyone in the Pac-12 hates Oregon as much as any team. Nobody likes a corporate shill, especially at a far-left liberal university like Oregon where they constantly (and hypocritically) denounce corporate shills.

Well, I agree to an extent. Wash state and Washington will always be rivals as long as they're in the same conference. Now you could argue that UW and UO have a secondary rivalry but would Oregon fans agree? I don't think so. Most ppl want a rivalry with a team historically better than them. Which is why Portland state always gets hyped to play EWU and UM fans always minimize and refuse to acknowledge their rivalry with EWU. A lot of UM fans always say " oh Idaho is our secondary rivalry" yea bc Idaho was very good in the sky and was the "Montana before Montana" and is currently in FBS. If EWU expands the east side or gets the stadium capacity over 15,000 permanent seats, and continues its dominance over the conference, you will see UM, & we've already seen PSU, take -much greater- pride in their rivalry with EWU.

Michigan/Ohio State
Army/Navy
Alabama/Auburn
Texas/Oklahoma

Are the four that immediately come to mind...

Personally I think the best rivalry in the Pac-12 is the one currently on TV...the Civil War.

Actually, I think Eastern is trying harder to make Portland State a rival than Portland State is trying to make a rival of Eastern.

I went to the Eastern / Portland State game last year at JELD-WEN Field and, no joke, there were at best 1,000 PSU fans there. It was really embarrassing. Eastern brought about 2,500 or so fans and vastly outnumbered the PSU fans in attendance. I've been to pretty much every Eastern game in Portland for the last 15 or so years, and Eastern always outdraws Portland State, but last year seemed like record low interest for Portland State.

Plus, the local media doesn't embrace Portland State at all. They don't even acknowledge the existence of a rivalry --- or even a potential rivalry with Eastern. PSU probably played their best game of the year last week in Cheney and damn near beat the Eagles. Wanna know what it earned them in Portland? A 12th page (honest to God, TWELTH page!!!) article that was picked up from wire reports. In the lower right hand corner, no less.

Any rivalry with Portland State is one-sided, even a "manufactured" rivalry with Eastern. Until they can find some fans that give a rip about their program, it's hard to consider them a participant in a rivalry.

Over time it's Michigan and Ohio State. And I say that as someone who lives in SEC territory.

It's because they need their SEC brethren to beat their cupcakes so they can use the ol' "we beat up on each other in the SEC, WE DA BEST!!!" argument.

I believe that would be South Carolina / Clempson :D
It's a big deal even more so this year with each top 10 BCS.

AZ nailed it for the most part with ...
Army/Navy
Alabama/Auburn

The Roll Tide/War Eagle football rivalry is as good as it gets, and I say that from 3 states away  If you know any of those alums it's a year-round cheap-shot sniping contest with serious bouts of depression after each loss

I suspect Michigan/Ohio State & Texas/Oklahoma is on the same level. Carolina/Dook football is not quite on the level of the basketball rivalry, but it's quite damn close. There were 41k in the stands at Chapel Hill for the ODU Massacree, but it will be 65-70k standing room only today for Carolina/Dook, where the first words young children are taught are...

If you were watching the Ohio State/Michigan game just now you see why that's the biggest, most intense rivalry. They really, really hate each other.

Now Ohio State loses two key players to ejection while Michigan loses a special teams body. Ohio State's players should've kept their cool. They have a lot more on the line than Michigan does.

The NCAA needs to review that play there were additional players on both sides that needed to be ejected.

Definitely Army-Navy. Other games might get more attention in America, but worldwide, Army/Navy is definitely more recognized than any other game.
