Weber State's Purple-White scoring attack pleases Mcbride

Post by Wildcat Ryan »

Weber State Coach Ron Mcbride came away from Saturday's Purple/white scrimmage pleased wit hthe offensive effort as the white squad produced five touchdowns and a field goal. "I think that, other than the turnovers, the offense did a good job today," said Mcbride after the situational scrimmage that capped spring workouts. "I liked the red zone stuff, I thought that was alot better today. We'd also like to get a little better knock-off in the run game and I thought that was better today".

Quarter back Cameron Higgins was sharp, the 2008 Big Sky offensive MVP connected on 11-17 passes on the day for 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also led the offense to its lone field goal which came on the opening possesion. Both backup QBs -redshirt freshmen Joel Hancock and Mike Hok started slow before showing promise later in the scrimmage. Hancock was 1-3 with an interception in his first series, but hit on four of his final six attempts, finishing with 60 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Hoke meanwhile, was sacked twice in his opening series, but finished the day hitting four of five attempts for 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 48 yard scoring stike to Ben Chase.

The rushing attack remained solid even without 3 time Big Sky leading rusher Trevyn Smith, who sat out due to a shoulder injury. Redshirt freshman Bo Bolen, was the no.1 tailback for the Cats on Saturday. Bolen carried the ball 15 times for 67 yards including a 30 yard scamper midway. Freshman C.J. Tuckett finished just shy of Bolen's total with 65 yards on 12 carries.

Cody Nakamura led the recieving corps, hauling in five catches for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Tim Toone caught three balls for 21 yards and Mike Phillips caught a pair of passes for 82 yards, including a 60-yard pass from Higgins on the opening play of the scrimmage.

The Defense did not disapoint either, racking up three interceptions, three sacks, and nine tackles for losses. Sam Fenn, Gabe Bowers and Ryan Eastman all recorded sacks, while Blake Keller, Jordan Brown and Antwain Stutson accounted for the three interceptions. Browns pick put the purple team on the scoreboard as he returned an interception of Higgins 35 yards for a score.

"We didnt do alot of moving around on defense today," said Mcbride. "We wanted to stay pretty base today, and that allowed the offensive line to tee off a little bit. Overall Im really pleased wit hwhat we we were able to do this spring. You can never be real happy with everything, which Im not, but as long as you keep your heads, you'll be alright. So now what we have to do is finish off our finals and grades and go into the summer.

Come on Weber, go out and bring back another Big Sky Title.

It is going to be interesting to see if anyone steps up and comes anywhere close to replacing Smith.

Well i dont think smith is done for the year so i think they are okay in the rushing department, but their backup seems to have done rather well.

Sounds like the "O" will keep rolling for Weber. Hopefully we won't have to let you guys borrow our title for the year. I can live with sharing it a little bit. :D

Just to clarify, nobody should take what I just said too seriously. It's a joke and no team in the conference will be taken lightly by anyone else...especially Weber.

Yes, it will be interesting indeed, but we'll have to wait until 2010 to find out, since Smith is only out for the spring. He will be back for the fall.

A more interesting question for 2009 might be, "who will take Marcus Mailei's place as the lead blocker for Smith?!??" 8-)

Don't worry we have plenty of gaps to fill, just not in the running back department. O-line, D-line, linebacker corps...

Although Weber doesn't have a line of 30 perfect specimens show up at the door every year (like Bobby Hauck at Montana), Mac always recruits well and seems to come up with a few aces. One of the aces for next year is Jordan Brown, Snow College transfer who enrolled at the break and played in the spring games. Brown finished the spring season with an interception for a touchdown.

Just to pile on a bit, it is always inappropriate to cut and paste an entire online article.

The appropriate thing to do is to cut and paste or paraphrase a few lines to supplement the points you want to make, give credit to the originator, then provide a link to the original article.

Cheers!

He's the only one I've seen do it in a long time here Native and I can saftly assume that it was an honest mistake on his part. We don't have that problem here very often and they are always called out on it.

I 'm sorry to be an a**hole, but better to receive a scolding from me than to get the site shut down, which WILL happen as we grow the site, if we are not scrupulously careful.

...what the heck was I THINKIN', running off the only other Weber fan here... there are only FIVE of us in the whole world... :(

I forgot to add that I had actually got the article from the Weber/Davis county newspaper the Standard Examiner, the credit is all theirs, and I didnt actually cut and paste, I was actually stupid enough to re-type the entire article.

Dont worry I will make sure I dont make the same mistake again.

p.s. I heard Trevyn's injury was not serious, and he will be at full health come fall. 4 years in a row? 8-)

I think it will be Weber and UM again at the top, but we will see significant rises I think from MSU, EWU, and maybe even NAU.

And if two Big Sky schools get to the playoffs, they need to be put on opposite sides of the bracket. Wouldnt it be awesome to have a Big Sky National Championship?

That would be nice, but it will never happen. "Regionalization" likely ensures that they will be on the same side.

IF Big Sky can get three, then maybe...

We have at least a chance to get three Big Sky teams to the playoffs this year because of an aggressive BSC out of conference schedule which includes 11 FBS opponents and 11 FCS opponents. Every team except Idaho State plays at least one non-conference FCS team.

If there is a three-way tie for the conference championship and we sweep non-conference FCS games, I would say there is a very good chance for three to make the playoffs.

The Big Sky will only get three teams if EWU wins their appeal. I don't think any other possible third wheel is good enough to make it.
