Ok first southern Utah isn't better than montana state. Suu did beat them in a head to head match up, however, it was more of msu taking a shit more than suu being excellent. That's why ur not ranked above them. In other words that wouldn't happen against if u played. Similarly eastern Washington wasn't ranked in the FBS poll after beating Oregon state bc that wouldn't happen again. EWU was just better that day and osu took a shit. Doenst mean EWU isn't good just means that wouldn't happen if they played again this weekend. So please SHUT THE FUCK UP about the rankings. Beat NAU (they are suspect) and you can talk. I personally think suu will beat NAU. But plz shut up abt msu.
Next. I'm tired of you arm chair quarterbacks talkin about "prevent defense la la la" once u get into the 4th quarter you're running a huge risk if you continue to run the same defense u ran earlier in the game. Ex. If I run a 4-3 defense during the first three quarters and dominate you to the point where I've got the game won. The offense is going to change its play style in the 4th qtr to something more styled to get QUICK POINTS. Bc they're literally running out of time. Amirite SUU fans? Now bc they r going to take shots down the field more often, it becomes much more risky to run the same 4-3 which only gives me two deep. Instead one might run a dime or quarters defense to get more help "over the top". Which is how suu retained its lead untill time expired.

All I know is that I prefer for the team I'm pulling for to take the approach of getting after the quarterback in a situation where the other team is behind and has to pass more rather than hanging back and "keeping everything in front of them." I realize there's a risk to that. But there's also risk to the hanging back thing.BlackFalkin wrote:Well!? Amirite suu fans? U cowardly bastards. It'd be interesting to see if anybody's done a study to see if it really is a good idea to go into "prevent" mode.

Why is it that griz fans are the only FCS fan base that make repeated references about gay sex? It's an alarming trend, and frankly I worry abt the sanctity of this forum.

The study is that suu won. And the study is that EWU won vs um. The proof is in the pudding bro bo cop. What some of you armchair joe Montana's don't understand is when u blitz you leave areas of the field vacant. And if the opposing team has a worthy qb he will pick you apart. That's why blitzing is considered aggressive and only bringing 3 is considered conservative.

.... Continued. So building on that. If u bring 3 then bring 2 more on a delayed blitz (for example) and it gets picked up, you would mostly have 5 wrs and 6 defensive players. Usually that's a man coverage with safety help and if just ONE of your DB's gets burned..... It's 6! Or if u bring 6 and leave 5 to cover 5 you will get burned even easier. Just look at EWU's shaq hill. He's got about 3 tds of 60+ yards in the last for games bc of dbs getting burned.

So you disagree with Beau Baldwin, who said he was mad at himself for going conservative against the griz, thought it was a mistake, and would not be leaving his aggressive play when he has established a good lead anymore?

I think we went TOO conservative on -offense- and lost momentum. Continued aggression on -offense- was what EWU needed. Thanks for asking. That was a good question.

Coaches go to the prevent so as not to give up a quick score and they give up quick scores with the soft DSUUThunder wrote:I'm also surprised to see MSU still ranked that high after their 3 quarter shut out.... then again, they did throw up nearly 200 yards in the 4th quarter to that hideous, fan-blood-curdling, prevent (the win) defense that everybody seems to play when holding onto a lead. I still don't quite get why teams move away from what works when the clock is ticking down and the opposition is mounting a come back against their magical "oh now we're going to close this out" defensive scheme. I'm guessing quite a few studies have been done on the subject. Perhaps not published, official studies, but it seems likely that college football coaches who constantly crunch numbers and who's livelihood is based on decisions like these are probably playing calculated odds when turning to a prevent D and attempting to keep the game in front of them. (Someone on another board posted the Freakanomics piece disproving the theory that defense wins championships too which I'm guessing somewhat dovetails with this topic)JohnStOnge wrote:All I know is that I prefer for the team I'm pulling for to take the approach of getting after the quarterback in a situation where the other team is behind and has to pass more rather than hanging back and "keeping everything in front of them." And it makes sense. When you have a big lead and the opposition needs to score on every remaining possession, all you need to have happen is for them to make a mistake or two, or for your players to make a play or two. The odds are stacked enormously in your favor.
Case in point, every Eastern fan remembers the prevent D (not to mention the name of the coordinator) that lost us a quarterfinal game against SHSU in 2004. I'll bet you not many if any can tell you how many times since then we've had big leads in games and used the prevent to successfully secure the win. Honestly, I'm having trouble coming up with a game where it hasn't worked since then…and we've nursed more than a few big leads.
