Not all things equal... If he switches to the Republican Party and campaigned on their platform... blacks would not vote for him overwhelmingly. If he simply switched parties, but campaigned on the same issues and positions... they probably would vote overwhelmingly for him.

I don't think so. Might make a few percentage points difference. But I think that at this point in history the overwhelming majority of Blacks in the United States are locked in to voting for the candidate with the "D" next to their name when the options are "D" and "R."

It'd be interesting to do an experiment where you'd randomly poll Black voters. State some positions for each of two candidates and their parties. Leave everything the same but switch the party back and forth. I'd be very confident betting what you'd see is that whether the candidate is a Democrat or a Republican would make much more of a difference than the positions do. And I think the overwhelming majority would pick the Democrat regardless of positions stated unless you picked positions like "re-institute slavery." Stick to things like for or against the Affordable Care Act, for or against Welfare Reform, "Pro Choice" or "Pro Life," for or against prayer in public school, etc., and the overwhelming majority would pick the Democrat regardless of which "side" he or she is on.

I think you'd see that effect among white voters too...where just the party made some difference. But I don't think it would be nearly as strong. It might not even change who the majority would say they would vote for.

I think if you think most Blacks are sitting there carefully considering positions then choosing the "D" after thoughtful contemplation and/or that they'd be the least bit open to voting for a Republican you are kidding yourself. It's just what they do. When they go in the voting booth they pick the "D."

Yeah, you're right. Blacks are clearly incapable of thinking about political positions and coming to their own conclusions.

Blacks, including guys like MLK supported Republicans for decades. It wasn't until the Southern Strategy and the Republicans deciding to alienate the black community that they began to vote overwhelmingly Democratic.

Keep telling yourself that they just vote 'D' regardless of the positions of either political party.

Republicans have lost almost every single demographic now except the old, white, evangelical voter. It isn't because every other demographic has mindlessly decided to start voting Democratic...

First let me point out that the majority of Whites in every age group voted for Romney in the last election. The majority of Whites in the youngest age group defined by exit polls, 18 - 29, voted for Obama in the 2008. But that was an unusual result. Most of the time they vote majority Republican. Also, in 2008, every other age group among Whites, including 30 - 44, voted majority for McCain. So I don't think it's correct to make the statement that only "old, white, evangelical" people vote for Republicans; though religion does play a role.

Christians vote majority Republican. THE HORROR! Never mind that they are the backbone of this country (and I say that even though I am not one of them).

And what do you think is important to Blacks? Handouts? Getting the advantage in terms of affirmative action? Getting the job or the university acceptance over someone who is more qualified for the position than they are because they are Black and they contribute to "diversity?"

Is that what's important to them? Is that why they pick the "D?"

Basically what you see when you look at exit polling is that the people who make this country work vote majority Republican while the majority of the human dross vote Democrat. That's the situation we have. And unfortunately the proportion of people who fall into the "human dross" category is large enough to keep the Democrats in power.
