Charleston Southern Hosting Citadel 2014; At Citadel 2015

Post by BJuice »

The city rivalry continues and comes to Charleston Southern, finally!!!

Charleston Southern to Host The Citadel in Football for First Time in 2014
Charleston Southern is “excited” to host The Citadel, athletic director Hank Small said. But he acknowledged that 4,000-seat Buccaneer Field will need some upgrades before its ready to host a game of that magnitude.A record crowd of 6,135 fans packed Buccaneer Field last week to see CSU’s win over Big South rival Coastal Carolina. But that’s about half the size of the crowd of 12,196 at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Aug. 31 for CSU’s 32-29 win over The Citadel.
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to host The Citadel,” Small said. “It’s great for our university and for our community. We are going to do everything we can to be good hosts. We’re very concerned about seating capacity, restrooms, concessions, all of those things.” One upgrade that has already been approved is new lights for the stadium, to be installed this winter, Small said. That would allow a tentatively planned 6 p.m. kickoff for The Citadel game, slated for Sept. 20, 2014, and also would permit CSU to host FCS playoff games in the future.
Small said the school is investigating other improvements to the stadium. “Everything is being discussed, but nothing has been decided yet,” Small said. “We’re looking and investigating all areas of possible improvement. Certainly we’ve learned this season that we have an outstanding coaching staff and group of young men, and we want to surround them with a facility that can host games like The Citadel, and hopefully playoff games.”
Small noted that the record crowd at the Coastal Carolina game included fans standing two-deep around the field.“We’d like to be a little better hosts than having people two-deep around the field,” he said.

That's good, that CSU is hosting The Citadel, and that lights are going up.........but wouldn't you think the first upgrade to your facility would be adding/improving seating, restrooms & concessions, parking, etc.? What good what it do to have 3000 people standing around the track at night?
1-AA is tops!!

I agree. I don't understand why lights are the first priority and why lights are such a big deal. Expanding the seating and upgrading the appearance of the stadium would be a much greater priority for me. I would rather see a more permanent looking stadium with brick, mortar, and concrete rather than just bleachers in front of the pressbox and suites.

Day games on Saturdays in the fall are part of the college football tradition. Plus, a day game in late September in Charleston is a HUGE home field advantage for the Buccaneers. The heat can be outrageous during the early part of the season when we kick off at 1:00pm, 1:30pm, or even 11:00am as we have on a couple of occasions this season.

Oh well. I'm just happy to see upgrades coming so that people will be able to move on and get off the topic of constantly commenting on the size of out stadium. I'm happy to see our program gaining respect and attention. We have a great group of coaches who are committed to Charleston Southern and building something special.

I played 4 years for csu and yes , the 1pm heat is a big advantage. But...it keeps fans away too since we dont have a rabid following like App or FBS teams. Lots of CSU fans may stay home...as they are also Clemson and USC fans...if its hot and good games are on TV. Plus CSU has a lot of students who leave for the weekend. Being able to have a Thursday night game would boost the student attendance a lot.

All great news though. They do need to add another 3000 seats though. That would probly be enough. GO BUCS!!

DIdn't I say that the lights were the first thing to happen. This is great news and I look forward to attending this game.

I've been a Citadel fan since I was a young boy. I spent many Saturday afternoons at JHS with my dad, brothers and uncles watching the Bulldogs, eating boiled peanuts and drinking nehis.

Jesus turned wine into water

Moses parted the Red Sea

Joshua blew down the walls of Jericho

You'd think CSU would be in good with these people enough to create a few more thousand seats

Are not all things possible through Jesus?

Relax. We've hosted far better SoCon teams before: Wofford Samford Chattanooga and East Tennessee State are a few. We even hosted South Florida in 98. SC State has been here.

So dont think you guys will be the highest profile team ever on that opposing sideline.

Maybe we should explore the possibility of a nicer, bigger venue in your area.

Summerville High School has a much nicer facility and it's right in your backyard!

BTW Jesus is not happy with your attitude

The only time CSU has ever had off campus home games were in 91 vs SC State at Sville and in 99 vs PC at Fort D bc the stadium pressbox was being worked on.

They'll expand seating this offseason. The game will be on campus.

As for Jesus......hes a CSU fan. Hes ok w it.

We aint no damn Catholic school!!! In the mandatory 1 religious class each CSU student must take, they make it clear to let us know that, while we are a dry campus, and wine was served in Biblical times, it was ONLY served because they lacked water sanitization back then- and they used the alcohol to mix with water to kill the germs in it.

At least that's what they told us.

And we responded by saying that premarital sex may be wrong..........but if we don't marry her, it aint premarital.

Over the past 20 years, that is probably the single biggest thing that kept CSU from being that 5-6ish team in 99-01 years, and that 7-9 win team from 05-07, to what it could be if it "turned the corner". Everyone knows facilities are the #1 draw for offensive line recruits. They don't get any glory. Facilities draw them in. And CSU's problem over the years always seems to be a true, quality offensive line and depth. The 65 scholarships fixed the depth problem that they had up to 2004. Now...the OL is pretty good, even without a great stadium and weightroom. Add those, with CSU's already decent tradition of having good skill players and defensive front 7 guys, and we could be on to something.

Facilities are a must but look again at the team. The offense is powerful b/c of Croghan, Reyes and that tall WR. The defense is a brick wall. After what I saw, that much is clear. CSU has a strategy and it works: Score early, take the lead and then play a game of time possession. Reyes is a Junior this year, btw.
