Not that it means much...

...but congrats to ODU for their decisive victory over perennial FBS doormat Idaho. A team in transition shouldn't be able to do that to an FBS program, even one as bad as Idaho. It appears as if ODU has turned the corner faster than expected (DEFINITELY faster than GA St, but that was to be expected, too).

Maybe this will be the nail in the coffin for the Vandals' colossal failure of an FBS experiment. Though if they dropped back to the Sky, they'd probably STILL be about as good as UNC. (In football, anyway. UNC would be TONS better than Idaho in other sports like women's hoops....)

I'm no Vandal fan by any measure, but that is a lot of garbage, even for you. Idaho would contend for championships after a few years in the Sky.

I'm not even sure they could beat your Bungles on a consistent basis....

This is not intended as smack talk... but I went to watch Eastern play Idaho in the Kibbie Dome last year. Idaho might have been the worst team on Eastern schedule all year long. Eastern didn't play very well, still beat them 20-3, and really the scoreline totally flattered the Vandals (It easily could have been a 5 TD spread). Granted, the Eagles didn't play Northern Colorado or Idaho State last year, but they would have struggled to beat anyone in the Big Sky and absolutely, positively, would have been in the lower half of the conference standings.

And it doesn't appear that Idaho has improved any this year, either.

I don't know about that. The 80s/90s Idaho teams would likely beat this year's Idaho team without much trouble, plus they'd have to jettison a bunch of recruits to meet the scholarship limits. And fan support likely wouldn't be what it was for them 20+ years ago, either.

And they get to play Florida State towards the end of the season. :shocking:

Oh I think they'd have a shot to be plenty competitive. Decent facilities would give them a chance with recruiting and geographic rivalries and a shot at winning would help with fan support.

This. I think people under estimate the effect that winning consistently can have on a program, whatever the level. I went to many a game in the Kibbie Dome in the 80's and 90's, and Idaho's program was much more competitive back then, IMO. And that is in large part due to the fact that they were winning.

I ran into a good handful of ODU fans at the Amtrak station Friday night in Spokane. Glad their long trek paid off.

Winning would help fan support, but there would be an at least temporary exodus of many current fans who don't remember/care about the old days too (not to mention an exodus of players). Their return to relevance would take a lot longer than you guys think, IMO. Idaho football might be screwed whether they move down or not. Moving down would at least give them a shot at redemption, but they wrecked the ship the moment they decided to follow Boise.

Keep in mind that Idaho barely has a winning record against the Big Sky since after moving up. And it's a noticeably worse winning % versus the Big Sky than they had their last 10 years in the league.

Lets get this conversation back on the greatness of ODU and off the topic of how bad Idaho is.
Thank You.

OK.

Idaho is 10-7 (.588) against the Big Sky as an FBS team.

From 1985 through 1995 (okay, 11 years), the Vandals were 64-21 (.753) against Big Sky opponents. This includes a few intraconference playoff games from the '80s.

We may not be undefeated against them since they moved up, but we definitely have a winning record during that time frame. Pretty sure Montana does as well. That's probably where most (if not all) of those Big Sky victories against Idaho are coming from. Take away UM and EWU, and Idaho has probably faired pretty well against the Big Sky. I still think they were a far better program back in the 80's and 90's though.

Idaho is 3-3 vs. EWU
1-0 vs. PSU
4-0 vs. ISU, but they struggled to beat lousy Bengal teams in '06 and '08.
1-4 vs. Montana
1-0 vs. MSU

So, yes, all the losses came to UM & EWU. However, nearly half the wins came against Idaho State so…
Surprisingly, they haven't played Weber or NAU since moving up.
