Really liking our company's insurance agent right now. Our normal renewal date is January 1. She recommended we move our renewal date to December 1 so that would buy us another 11 months without having to change to an ACA compliant plan. With this we only ended up with a 3.4% increase although we do have to pay it 1 month sooner, in December instead of January. Had we waited we would have had a 16.5% increase for a comparable plan that was ACA compliant.

My rates are going up marginally (~2.5%). I talked to our VP of HR and as I understand it we're partially self insured - the company covers expenses to a point and then a policy kicks in. We have BC/BS which is pretty good coverage and our portion is relatively cheap. He said he really has no idea how this whole thing is going to work out with ACA, and he said we're only a couple of pretty catastrophic issues away from having some significant increases to our annual rates (i.e. transplants, bypasses, etc.). I'm fortunate.

If you factor in the ACA fees our increase works out to 7.9% or it would have been a 21% increase with the new ACA compliant plan.

The obvious point, well, obvious for everybody else, because its been all over the media for the past six months, is that from the 1977 election until this week, Virgina has elected a governor from the opposite party as the President every time, even when the President won in Virginia.

Being at an employee owned company means the lions share of the cost difference comes out of the profit margin to lessen the impact felt by employees. This results in fewer bonuses and raises, smaller budgets for training and other career development opportunities.

I’m in a fortunate position but this also doesn’t change the fact that millions of other people will get hammered by increased costs. This also doesn’t change the fact the ACA will have an impact on the economy and that it will add another mountain of debt on top of the trillions already incurred by this and previous administrations. My year over year increase is just over $15 a month, or $1500 a year. That’s $1500 less going into the local economy via nights at the bar, trips to the movies, dinner, hookers and blow, trips to wine country, etc…also means the wifey and I will be cutting back around the house on services we don’t need (goodbye cable, it was a fun 6 months while it lasted).

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — From website crashes to long holds on calls, the issues involved with the unveiling of the Affordable Care Act are well documented.

But now, could it be breaking couples up?

CBS 2’s Don Champion spoke to one Brooklyn couple on Wednesday who said they may be forced to get a divorce to get health insurance.

Nona Willis Aronowitz and Aaron Cassara’s love affair began at a party in 2008.

“We kissed on a bean bag chair,” Aronowitz said.

A year later, it grew into a marriage at City Hall in Manhattan.

“It was really sudden,” Aronowitz said. “It was basically because he needed health insurance, and I had a job that would give that to him.”

But four years later, there is now irony in the fact the couple could soon divorce for the same reason.

“After Obamacare has rolled out, we realized that we would save thousands of dollars if we got divorced,” Aronowitz said.

The issue for Aronowitz and Cassara is that together as family of only two, they make more than the $62,000 level to qualify for subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. But if they lived together unmarried, they would qualify for the subsidies and could literally save hundreds of dollars a month on their health care.

A single person can qualify for subsidies if they make less than $46,000 a year.

“It’s really complicated,” Aronowitz said. “Go on the website, you’ll see what I mean,” Aronowitz told Champion.

Aronowitz, a freelance writer, and Cassara, who works as a freelancer in the film industry, lost their health coverage recently when Aronowitz was laid off.

Critics of the Affordable Care Act have called the pricey decision the couple faces the “marriage penalty.” But the income levels for subsidies were set by Congress.
