Hats off to Sac State

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

I know Garrett Saffron doesn't always play this well, but that was a truly great quarterbacking performance by him today (over 500 YoTO, 6 Total TDs). I don't recall him making a bad decision once, despite the Griz D-Line (especially Kidder) getting pressure constantly. 3 fumbles & a couple overly conservative play calls in overtime just barely cost Sac the victory.

Sucks the Hornets scheduled themselves out of the playoffs…

Yes, good game by Sac St today. :thumb:

I was watching(while I could) and listening with the laptop while cleaning the garage out today. We really got out played for a majority of the game and really only won because we forced turnovers and came through in OT.

I didn't see the game, but I've heard complaints about one of the late Griz TDs being a bad call (supposedly the guy didn't get in, but the officials gave it to him anyway). That said, the Hornet consensus seems to be that Safron had the game won, but Sperbeck p!$$ed it down his leg through conservative playcalling (AGAIN!). In retrospect, though, the true playoff-bound team won....

I am hopeful we can be a playoff team but we are not playing like one right now. :coffee:

I don't know what touchdown you are referring to as the big suck tv feed crapped out towards the end and I had to listen on the radio. It wasn't a bad thing is some ways as the announcers for this feed had about as much butthurt as a pedophile in prison. I kept listening just to hear how much they could spew out. I get that they are Sac St announcers but theses guys were really really really really biased and spent more time bitching than calling the game.

Somebody was claiming Canada didn't get in on the last 4th. & goal TD. The way the pile moved, I'm not sure how he couldn't have, but whatever.

I think Sperbeck made the right call not going for two (I was surprised he even considered it). That's a move you usually see from teams playing spoiler/nothing to lose. Sac wasn't one of those teams (though now they are). Not to mention the Griz have the best redzone D in the conference & Sac wasn't exactly shredding the D near the goal line—one play from the 3 was an under-50% proposition. The playcalling in overtime, on the other hand, was surprisingly conservative. That stuff on the zone read handoff on 2nd. & 10 really hurt the Hornets.

Yes, Nice game
The Sac QB is a tough fella

I couldn't tell if he was in from the replay but there were enough Griz players signaling TD that I'm sure he was in

Sperbeck should have went for 2. Easy to say now but our D was nonexistent the 2nd half. The Hornets needed to win out to have any shot at the playoffs so I don't know why he took it to OT. I was happy to see Sperbeck initially go for 2, but was dismayed that he was going to do so in a jumbo set with our 2 best WRs on the bench and so was ok with the PAT. He needed to go for 2 with a 3+ WR set that the Griz had no idea on how to defend.

When they came out and kicked the PAT after the timeout, I had a HUGE sigh of relief.

All in all it was an entertaining game that I knew the coaches would find a way to screw up. It has been Sperbeck calling card for the past few years now. Blown calls by the refs on both sides and the Hornets overcame them. Biggest issued I had with the refs were the late hits on Safron that were no calls. Biggest one was that low blow by #52 late in the 3rd. Backup QB comes in and fumbles on 3rd and long; then long Griz TD on the next play. :ohno:

Then Spurbeck goes to the read option that had no success all game long in OT and we settle for a FG. I knew it was over right there. :ohno:

Textbook call. You play for the tie at home. You play for the win on the road. The thinking is that the home team will get a boost from its fans in overtime on both sides of the ball. I didn't see any of the game, but the call makes sense.

Eh, the Griz probably would've stopped them.

1) I was like "crap" when Sac lined up to go for two, but they came out in a power formation. I knew UM had the edge there (as SD pointed out above).

2) The timeout was called right when Sac snapped the ball. The Griz were about to completely blow up the play if not for the last-second whistle (Not to mention Sac was desperately hurrying just to get the play off in time).

I still think going to overtime was the best call for Sac. One play from the 3 ain't easy, and Sac's last two TD catches came off deflections (they can't all go right to the WR ;) ). Also, Worst had missed a short FG earlier in the game. Sac's play calling in OT was questionable, though.

Got no dog in this fight, but yes, I read it - and found it humorous. The Griz hadn't been stopping shit all day long. But of course, they would have stopped it when it really mattered. Amirite?

Did you actually watch the game?

Like I said, Sac hadn't exactly been lighting it up inside the 10. They scored their last two TDs off lucky deflections. One play from the 3 isn't easy, and the Griz do lead the league in redzone D.

This. Griz hadn't stopped our spread formations all 2nd half, no reason to think it would have happened on a 2pt conversion.

We needed to win out to have a shot at the playoffs. IMO with that in mind you throw the textbook out the window. Seeing our D do nothing more than stand in the griz way was enough to know they had no shot at stopping any drive in OT.
