FCS/FBS Mismatches???

Post by Col Hogan »

Rivals.com has some issues with 10 FCS/FBS match-ups...calling them mismatches that the FBS squads should be ashamed to have on their schedules...
Of note is that Richmond beat Montana in the FCS championship game last season; Richmond has one FBS opponent (Duke) this fall, while Montana has none. Appalachian State, which owns perhaps the most famous victory ever by an FCS team (over Michigan in 2007), also has one game against an FBS opponent (East Carolina) this fall. If Appalachian State, Montana or Richmond were to replace any FCS school on this list, you can be certain the game would not be mentioned. But for some reason, none of the FBS big boys wanted to play any of that trio.

^agree with you. I think Chuck Southern vs. Florida has to be the #1 worst matchup though.

I can't disagree with the assessment either...but do find it interesting that, especially in light of what ASU did to Michigan, it seems that the upper level of FCS is now "off limits" to most FBS squads...

Also, the upper level teams don't NEED to play money games, usually.

the fear of "getting Michiganed" is I think very real for these big programs. many of their fans couldn't tell the difference between our top tier and Savannah State... so what's the dif? most FBS fans know Montana, Delaware and maybe a regional school or basketball powerhouse and that's about it.

book a squash match, avoid the Michigan problem... move along...

it's kinda sad... but I dont really blame the FBS schools either...

Wyoming and CSU this year are going to find out what it feels like to be "Michiganed". This is another example of a couple of FCS/FBS mismatches, Weber is just too powerful ;)

I hope thats just wishful thinking because the Mountain West is about to get a lot stronger, now that they want to be considered or are going to be considered a BCS conference.

Lol @ people saying Michiganed, that was one of the biggest flukes in sports history, I don't say that because I'm a Michigan fan.

I call Richmond-Duke a coin toss and Appy-ECU a blowout Appy win.

Exactly! If you are a Florida state fan/student, and all you hear is BCS this, and ACC,SEC that... chances are you dont know and or dont give a shit about UC davis. And more importanatly, cant tell the difference between Southern Utah & Montana bc they see both as a sure win.

Its not just wishful thinking, I honestly believe Weber can beat both of them, though I was being a little sarcastic about Weber being "too powerful".

Chuck South at UF is the biggest missmatch on earth I think. BUT, we need the money games for the next few years to make up for the 10 million or so that that jerk Parish took from our university funds we had invested through him. That will take years to recover from. Basically I see Mills using this situation to get his team to best competition he can find. We may take a beat down, but the boys in blue and gold will get a chance to play the best in the world and in the long run, that will make the Bucs a better program.

So what are the top ten most winnable FCS over FBS for next season?

Of course I will say Weber over Wyo but I'd say that even if I wasn't a WSU fan.

If UM was playing a non "Big Six" I'd say the same for them.

Beating a WAC/Mtn West/...is doable for the top tier of FCS.

Idaho State at Oklahoma deserves mention as one of the worst, on par with the Charleston Southern at Florida mismatch.

Both FBS schools will be favored by about 9 touchdowns.

Hey Wildcat! For the Big Sky, I think the three most winnable contests are Weber at Wyoming and Colorado State, and SacState at UNLV, in each case primarily because of the weakness of the FBS opponents.

None of the matchups will be slam dunks, but at least Weber will be favored by the oddsmakers against Wyoming.

Primarily, Native? While that will be a factor in those Weber games, it sounds like you're not giving Weber enough credit. That Weber will lose to Sac has NOTHING to do with bad play by Weber. The Wildcats can and probably will beat Wyoming partly due to the Cowboys' ineptitude but primarily because Weber is patently better than they are.

Sac, IMO, will beat Weber in another of our traditionally close games. Your assessment of Sac over UNLV and Weber over Colorado State is closer to the mark, however, than Weber over Wyoming.

Point taken, but I was not referring to conference games. Historically there is almost always a mismatch between FBS and FCS programs.

Can't wait for that 17 October home game in Ogden.

Will you be coming up?

Another site that ranks all the DI teams together is Massey:

http://www.masseyratings.com/rate.php?lg=cf

Go to the site and click on the button labeled "I" for Division I.

According to the Massey numbers, based on all games for the entire 2008 season, the top 10 FCS teams and their ranking with all DI teams, including FBS, are:

51 JMU
64 UR
73 UM
75 Nova
90 Appy
98 Weber
101 UNH
103 Wofford
105 UNI

Will UR play the whole game though? I thought JMU would give Duke a run but some of the JMU fans said that Matthews tries to stay healthy rather than win FBS games.

Idaho St and Oklahoma is clearly the biggest mismatch of this coming season. I can't hardly understand why OK scheduled this game.. granted they play a tough Big 12 schedule, but ISU? They're probably one of the worst FCS teams.. bottom third or fourth for sure. Great game for ISU, maybe they'll finally find the money to replace that piece of shit they call turf. I can see OK rolling up 50 pts before halftime, that's a really powerful offense.
