Villanova Season Over
They're 4-4 and can only get to 7 wins due to scheduling only 11 games this season.

I'm so sad over this. How did Talley manage to screw this season up?

Yet they'll still find a way to beat UD in the season finale, just like 2010.

Maybe not. But they sure have their work cut out for them. They have a 50/50 shot if they run the table. Three FCS losses to top 10 teams by a total of 6 points. Maine and Towson are legit title contenders to ND State and the Cats beat up on one and lost by two to the other. They will have some strong arguments if -and only if- they can win the remainder of their games. Would love to see the Battle of the Blue be for a playoff berth! Go Cats!

Legit title contenders to NDSU? Based on what? I think Maine's a very good team, and Towson has Terrance West (and what's with the idea that nova "beat up on" Towson? That was a 10 point game where Towson outgained nova and was done in by 3 more turnovers - hardly a thrashing) but I don't see any reason right now to say that Maine or Towson would make it out of the quarterfinals. This ain't the CAA from 5 years ago, the CAA's come back to the pack nationally. I think Maine and Towson are both very tough outs come playoff time, but until someone shows they can man up against NDSU I think it's a stretch to put anyone on their level.vutomcat wrote:Maybe not. Re: Villanova Season Over
NDSU appears to be the best team in FCS. We all agree. I wasn't putting Maine and Towson at their level. They are just two of a handful of teams that would have a chance of beating NDSU. There are some others that are legitimate contenders in my opinion. Eastern Illinois and Eastern Washington perhaps based on the polls and computer rankings.
Towson is the fourth ranked FCS team in the Sagarin ratings so they are certainly in the mix based on that. They are also ranked 7th in the most recent poll. Maine is in the top 10 in the computer rankings and polls as well. I have seen both of them play in person and they are imposing physically and have plenty of speed and good quarterback play. Maine's only loss is to Northwestern a very good FBS team that they gave a scare to.
The Towson- Villanova game was never in doubt. I was there. It was 38-14 at half. 45-22 in the fourth quarter. They scored two meaningless touchdowns at the end of the game to make it sound much closer than it was. That isn't a close game in most people's opinions. Embarrassing to be beat like that at home don't you think? I'll stick to my initial comment that the Cats beat up on them. Much like Maine beat up on the Hens. You remember that one?

That game was out of control due to the 21-0 start. Sh*t happens once things start off poorly and teams get taken out of their offense. West was abandoned a bit, and that saved your DLs and LB some pain.vutomcat wrote:They scored two meaningless touchdowns at the end of the game to make it sound much closer than it was. If the two teams played again, nova would get beat like a baby seal.
nova's D has been gashed repeatedly this year, and your offense has degenerated into a one man show...a show, mind you, that got tired at the end of the Maine game.
You folks were supposed to be in the Big East by now...you'd think that the players you recruited under that false impression would be better than they are.
In any case, the committee should not reward nova for being p*ssies and scheduling two byes. Two byes is an advantage against the field because of the extra rest and preparation, but Talley obviously knew his players weren't good enough or tough enough to play 12 regular season games this year.

Villanova earned that 21-0 lead. It wasn't awarded to them and it wasn't luck. They outplayed Towson that day. I am sure you didn't see the game because you couldn't say what you did about a rematch after watching that dismantling of an undefeated team on their home turf if you did.

I really don't see anyone outside of NDSU that should feel like they are head and shoulders above their playoff competition.GannonFan wrote:......but I don't see any reason right now to say that Maine or Towson would make it out of the quarterfinals.
Correct.........which can be traced directly to the recent failures of Delaware and JMU to put superior products on the field. Considering the numerous advantages that both of those programs enjoy with funding, facilities, fan support, and winning traditions.........both have underperformed at unacceptable levels.GannonFan wrote:This ain't the CAA from 5 years ago, the CAA's come back to the pack nationally.

So what. Nova has 11 Div I games. Outside the CAA, the majority of your contenders (winning records) in the 8 conferences that have a shot at having an at large team(s) (every conference except the NEC and Pioneer) I count 15 of 25 with only have 11 DIV I games:93henfan wrote:They're 4-4 and can only get to 7 wins due to scheduling only 11 games this season.

Re: Villanova Season Over
Saw the game. Again, a big lead on a couple silly turnovers transformed that game into a one-time nova special. Towson would have grinded you down...instead, they have to get out of their game plan. Hey, it happens.vutomcat wrote:Villanova earned that 21-0 lead. It wasn't awarded to them and it wasn't luck. They outplayed Towson that day. If nova was as good as you claim, they would not have, at home, been beaten soundly by Maine and also gotten beaten soundly in the second half versus UNH. UNH did whatever they wanted against your front 3. So did Maine. If it weren't for the big lead, Towson would have also tormented your undersize defense...and they still ripped you for a billion yards and points as it was.
Two byes = bye-bye.

"Silly" turnovers? One was a blocked pass by the Nova Def. Lineman Lewis and the other was a vicious hit on their receiver coming over the middle by Sarnese. Those are great football plays. Either you're lying about seeing the game or you don't know anything about football. I suspect the latter is true.

Re: Villanova Season Over
2010-2011, 20 team playoff, there were seven teams from the historically top 4 conferences that finished 7-4 playing an all Div I schedule that included a I-A game. All 7 made the playoffs:vutomcat wrote:Maybe not. But they sure have their work cut out for them. They have a 50/50 shot if they run the table. 2010:
7-4 UNI: made playoffs
7-4 NDSU: made playoffs
7-4 WCU: made playoffs
7-4 GSU: made playoffs
7-4 Villanova: made playoffs
7-4 UNH: made playoffs
2011:
7-4 JMU: made playoffs
2012: the following from the top 4 conferences, record vs Div I, played a I-A, didn't make the playoffs:
8-3 UR:
7-4 Towson
7-4 JMU
7-3 NAU
7-4 Citadel
7-4 YSU
Now this yr is a 12 game season, but as I've already pointed out, the majority of the teams outside the CAA are playing only an 11 game Div I schedule (either 12 game schedule with a Div II or 11 games).
Now we have a 24 team playoff. 8 Div I win teams out of the CAA/Big Sky/So-Con/MVFC/Southland and 9 Div I win teams out of the Big South/OVC/Patriot/MEAC plus the NEC & Pioneer AQ likely isn't going to = 24 teams.
VU's last 3:
@ JMU (VU will be slightly favored)
@ URI (sure win)
UD (VU might be favored)
IF VU wins their last 3, their 7-4 resume would be:
-loss @ Boston College by 10.
-loss @ likely 12-0, top 8 seed Fordham by 3.
-loss @ likely 6-5/7-4 UNH by 1.
-loss to likely 11-1 or 10-2, top 8 seed Maine by 2.
-win over a likely 11-1 or 10-2, top 8 seed TU.
-win over a possibly a playoff 8-4 UD
They would likely have the strongest resume of any 7 Div I win team in the country I think its a lot better than 50-50 Nova would get in.
Course I hope this weekend JMU makes this all a moot point....
