Coyotes continue to make progress

Post by dbackjon »

With four practices remaining before its annual spring game, the University of South Dakota football team continues to make strides, according to head coach Ed Meierkort.

South Dakota will hold its spring game on Friday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at the DakotaDome.

A strong offensive line has long been a staple for teams coached by Meierkort, entering his sixth season at the USD helm. This season is no exception, with a veteran offensive front an integral part of an offense that returns 10 starters.

"Our offensive line is a good group," said Meierkort, whose team will play its second season as an NCAA Division I transitional school competing in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Meierkort is 33-18, which is the best start of any head coach in his first five years in school history.

South Dakota's offensive front has been anchored this spring by left tackle Jake Arthur, left guard Luke Nordquist, center Ben Wampler and right tackle Tom Compton. Those four are returning starters, including former Spencer, Iowa, prep Wampler, while Brent Johnson also saw extended playing time at right guard last season.

Offensive line coach Tony Spencer is entering his fifth season in the Coyote program. USD ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring, total offense and rushing yardage. Arthur and Nordquist each earned post-season honors from the Great West Conference.

Tim Ross, Rob Cunningham and R.J. Polley are younger players making a push for playing time in the offensive line.
