Newsflash: YOU DON'T EITHER. Nobody knows exactly how we got here or where we're going when it's all over. It's human nature to cling to something that helps us make sense of our puzzling existence. But man is not merely a rational being. He is an intuitive being too.

The problem with "rational" persons is that they use their "rationalism" to minimize their intuitive nature, which in the end, isn't very rational.

In the end, this is the disconnect between people of no faith, and people of faith, and why discussion between the two breaks down, often into insults. It is why atheists don't understand people of faith, and why they think people of faith are "feeble minded." And it is why people of faith think people of no faith are just missing something.

Hitler was born Catholic, but he abandoned his childhood faith as an adult. He never attended Mass; he described himself to others as a "pagan"; and, of course, as a leader of the Nazi party, he was excommunicated by the blanket excommunication of the Nazi party leadership issued by the German bishops in 1933.

Yes, I'm sure that's what they taught you in your catholicism classes, but unfortunately for you Hitler retained his religious beliefs his whole life.

No rite of excommunication was taken against Hitler. Fact.

Your revisionist apologetics have grown tiresome. :coffee:

Throughout his reign, Hitler, when necessary, invoked the Catholic Church through its imagery and myths to motivate the German populace. It was a big tool in his arsenal as well as in those of his henchmen.

Why? Catholics were a distinct minority in Germany. Lutherans predominated: 70% of the population was Lutheran.

Your claim makes little sense. Why would Hitler invoked Catholic imagery when the overwhelming majority of the population was not Catholic?

It is true Hitler used religious imagery, but not because he was religious. Hitler's intention was to form a national synod in Germany under the control of the Nationalist Socialist party. He in fact started this "church," and appointed Ludwig Mueller (a noted anti-Semite) as the Reich Bishop in 1933. Hitler's ultimate intention was to co-opt the Lutheran churches and disband the Catholic churches.

I think you're assuming too much in the highlighted above, Joe. He stole from where he could and the Catholic Church had the richest stores of available iconographic material which he could use for his devices. Nothing more.

D, my main issue with most of what you are saying (and Cap too) is that just because Hitler, or anyone for that matter, was raised with a certain religion it means they are completely entrenched in it.

My father was raised in a Catholic household. My grandparents never missed a mass until their deaths. My father hasn't been to a catholic church, other than funerals and weddings, since about 1981. He was raised Catholic, but he would consider himself as Catholic as you do....since you two were raised Catholic. Hell, my father is actually a deacon or usher or some shit like that at a Baptist church in my home town. Even still to say that my father is "religious" is a step or four too far.

I, and if my mother knew this she would kick my ass, have been to maybe 4 church services since I left the house in 2006 that didn't involve Christmas, Easter, Baptism, funeral, wedding, etc... I was raised Baptist, went on mission trips to Mexico, Canada, Wisconsin, and Missouri, I volunteered at Christian clothing/food pantries as a staff and occasionally as a maintenance worker in cities up to an hour and a half from my home town, etc...

Just because I, or anyone, was raised in a religion doesn't make me religious or mean that I follow that doctrine. I have a great faith system loosely based on my Baptist upbringing but has almost nothing to do with the stories of Abraham, Noah, Job, Jonas, etc... I draw as much from some Buddhist, Shinto, Hindu, Toaist, etc.. beliefs as I do parts of th Christian faith. I'd bet the vast majority of Christians do the same, just don't realize it.

Faith is wonderful and can do many things for a person.

Though I agree that religion is the issue. Religion is completely flawed, and that the way Hitler came to power can be said for the way that religion gains so much power over people as well.

Faith = awesome
Religion = not so much

Hey now, Mexico at least has plumbing (in some areas). Not sure the same can be said about those other places.
