The whole idea of providing health "insurance" for people with pre-existing conditions is ridiculous, for instance. I mean really. Think about it.

But the entitlement mentality prevails. If you have a personal problem other people are of course obligated to pay for it if you can't.

The whole thing should've been seen as absurd on its face. We're going to create a new entitlement program to guarantee that everybody has a certain level of health care and it's going to SAVE us money.

And people believed that. Good GRIEF.
We can afford to provide healthcare for everyone...including people with pre-existing conditions. Think about it.
We can afford it as long as we convince those that have to pony up for it feel the same way. There's enough money out there, it's just a matter of getting enough taxes as revenue.

Or reducing expenses. I had a friend just go in for outpatient hernia surgery. He was there 5 hours. It cost $12,000.

What's he gonna do? Shop around? Go out of network? Go without?

I agree, it's gotten so confusing and out of hand as to what things really cost that we almost need to start over. Let people see what things really cost, let them make a decision about what they want to pay for, and go from there. I like the marketplace idea, but it's not going to work because the costs are still basically hidden and not well understood.

That's why I'm a fan of single payer. Providers, manufacturers, and pharma could compete in an open market and consumers could shop services and products around.

The amount of waste in paper work alone with the current system is astounding. Small offices spend billions on administrative costs alone. That's money and resources that could be going to care.

Well, except for when they need it - you know, the uninsured, gets hurt in accident, goes to ER, we all pay for that. Overall, It will be a wash or a reduction for that age group. They are generally health-system freeloaders.

Looks like the prez is working Hollywood and Oprah to get 20-30 yr olds enrolled in ACA. Who better to enlighten us about what we should be doing than celebrities?
Stepping up efforts to enroll young Americans in health insurance this fall, the Obama administration is enlisting the help of actors and entertainment industry officials to educate 20-something consumers about the need to get covered.
Senior administration officials met Monday morning with a group of entertainers to talk about media campaigns to reach young Americans about the Affordable Care Act, according to a White House official.
Among those at the meeting were actors Jennifer Hudson, Kal Penn and Amy Poehler; Mike Farah of the website Funny or Die; Daniel Kellison of YouTube Comedy; Royal Pains sitcom creator Andrew Lenchewski; songwriter Bruce Roberts; and Troy Carter of the entertainment agency Atom Factory.
Also in attendance were representatives for Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, the Latin Recording Academy and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which produces the Grammys.

I don't have a link available, but I read that Maryland's Obamacare exchange has enrolled less than 400 people out of an estimated 600,000 uninsured in Maryland in the first week of enrollment.

Methinks Obamacare will crumble under its own weight fairly quickly.

There are a lot of parallels to the Social Security program IMO - counting on generally healthy, EMPLOYED younger people to help fund less healthy older people. Except the job market for 20-30 year olds is bad and the Baby Boomers continue to age and demand more benefits.

Don't know what's up with Maryland, but it seems like the online exchanges in most states were flooded with demand the first few days.

Perhaps the Tea Party will support Baby Boomer euthanasia in exchange for passing the continuing resolution and raising the debt ceiling. They seem like caring, compassionate people.

Maryland is one of the states that decided to create its own website for the exchanges... and the website couldn't handle the traffic and has been crashing.

If the number is still low in a month or two, it will be more telling.

Am I the only one who laughed when I read this article..?
What do we think is going to happen when

1) We have insurance companies write our healthcare policy
2) We have profiteers and oil companies structure our Foreign Policy
3) Weapons manufacturers and Defense contractors determine our global military needs
4) Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch shell employees out number biologists on our Environmental committees

Everything is for sale baby... get in line
the $700 trillion is going fast
