My late and former grandfather-in-law, a WWII Tin Can Sailor on the USS Saufley (mentioned by name in the book Tin Can Sailor), went all Spandos on me one night when we were both rip-roaring drunk on tawny port. He said that GHWB pulled a "John Kerry" during the bailout incident leaving the other two men on his plane for dead - neither survived. He also went into a few other conspiracies about GHWB. I was flabbergasted and entertained and, once sober, intrigued.

I have a lesbian friend who has a long time live-in partner and on hearing about this I thought about whether or not I'd sign as a witness if (probably when) marriage between homosexuals becomes legal in my State. In the end I concluded "no." I can't do anything about the fact that other people have been brainwashed into accepting the absurd but I can chose not to facilitate it myself.

However, I don't begrudge Bush the Elder for making his own decision on the matter. Not the first time he did something I don't agree with but on balance he's a very respectable guy. Honest too I think. Bottom line is that, to me, he earned a lot of respect points by flying a fighter in World War II and getting shot down near an Island where the Japanese commander ate the livers of captured US service men. I think one can cut him some slack on signing as a witness so a couple of perverts can do more to convince themselves that what they're doing is "normal" when it's not.

Sure enough, the President approached us, called my family member by name, thanked him for his efforts, and gave him a gift. My family member then started to introduce me when Mr. Bush interrupted him, shook my hand and said, "Yes, Mr. Blueballs. We met in Orlando at the AFA convention. I am so glad you could join us. Merry Christmas," and he gave me an official presidential pen with his laser engraved autograph.

I was awestruck and dumbfounded all at once. My family member told me he saw it every day and my reaction was normal. That pen remains a prize possession.

GHW Bush was scheduled to speak at 10:30 am Central, to a group at the company I used to work for. About 9:15 we heard news that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. The appearance was cancelled of course. I still have the ticket in my office.

During their attack, four TBM Avengers from VT-51 encountered intense antiaircraft fire. While starting the attack, Bush's aircraft was hit and his engine caught on fire. He completed his attack and released the bombs over his target scoring several damaging hits. With his engine on fire, Bush flew several miles from the island, where he and one other crew member on the TBM Avenger bailed out of the aircraft. However, the other man's chute did not open and he fell to his death. It was never determined which man bailed out with Bush. Both Delaney and White were killed in action. While Bush anxiously waited four hours in his inflated raft, several fighters circled protectively overhead until he was rescued by the lifeguard submarine, USS Finback. For this action, Bush received the Distinguished Flying Cross. During the month he remained on Finback, Bush participated in the rescue of other pilots.
