If the truth be told, it was a combination of everything. Automakers consolidated to making one product and one only - cars - then, automation displaced workers, workers moved out, tax base suffers, taxes go up to recover, poor government decisions, etc, etc, etc - all leading to a devastating and embarrassing outcome for everyone involved, 1950's to present.

No vision, just focus on the immediate dollar gain - you know - Reaganism

AND, another reason why a strong government must coexist peacefully alongside industry in a partnership for the public good.
