Actually, it was the Apostle Paul:

"2 Corinthians 9:7
New International Version (NIV)
7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Republicans give so much to charity because they are the most religious.

Yes, some religious donations are charitable...

But, giving thousands of dollars to the 700 Club, building a new 25k seat megachurch, or adding a gymnasium onto a church aren't exactly charitable donations, imo.

Would be interesting to see a breakdown of charitable giving looking at money actually going to the needy.

Sure. But how much does Jesus want you to give? That's the key.

Jesus told me to give to the UD Athletic Fund.

No wait. That was Bernard Muir. My bad.

:coffee:

I have many more questions about donations the government decides to make than I have about an individual's charitable choices.

While I will agree with you to a certain extent, the examples you gave are somewhat flawed. Regardless of what organization receives the donation, and regardless of what it is for, if it reduces the demand for municipal services then it is "charitable". The gymnasium is an example of reducing the demand on municipal services. So is private schools.

Yes it is the key. I'm sure He wants me to give the same proportion as He wants you to give, which is sacrificial.
The OT standard was 10% to the church, 10% to the civil government and 10% every third year to the poor.

He sure did, except for the fact that Jesus never said that.

Churches have the best Bingo games, the best potluck suppers, and preacher's daughters... and most don't have a bunch of bums who smell like week old piss hanging around. What's not to like?
