Critics of Coastal Carolina might choose to point out the Big South is among the weakest of the scholarship-offering FCS conferences. However, the Big South only has six current members, so Moglia and his staff have the ability to define their season by scheduling tough non-conference games against other FCS teams. Coastal Carolina took a gamble on hiring Joe Moglia. After all, he had never been a head coach at the collegiate level and had not worked among college athletes since the early 1980s. With a win over Elon on Saturday, the Chanticleers will likely crack the top 10 of the FCS polls. So how then did Moglia manage to get a job for which he is completely unqualified? The obvious answer is his wealth.

Most FCS schools struggle to support their athletic departments financially. They rely on wealthy donors to help support the school's athletic teams. By adding a well-connected billionaire as head coach of the football team, Coastal Carolina significantly improved its prospects for receiving quite a bit of donations in the future.

It's a shrewd business deal, but completely tramples the integrity of college sports. If the NCAA is all about athletic and academic integrity and amateurism, it sure doesn't show in Coastal Carolina's hire.

$40,000 for each FCS playoff win
$100,000 for an FCS national championship
$25,000 for scoring between 950 and 970 in the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Rate review (APR)
$40,000 for scoring greater than 971 on that scale. Coastal’s football program has never scored higher than 951 and scored a 932 in the most recent report.

I didn't know his comp, only that he'd done without in some earlier gigs. I would have thought that there were a number of better qualified coaches to take over once the cheese slid off David Bennett's cracker, but it seems to be working out. His networking and apparent coaching skills at this level do appear to be a good investment.

His business contacts have been great for us but he also has been doing well on the field. He is taking less salary than Bennett and that was to get good assistant coaches into the program.

Coastal Carolina University President David A. DeCenzo announced today that the University has received a significant gift from TD Bank Group (TD), a North American financial institution with operations in South Carolina.

TD will donate a total of $5 million to CCU's Chanticleer Athletic Foundation, the 501(c) (3) charitable nonprofit organization that raises funds for CCU athletics, over a five-year period. In keeping with TD's commitment to the environment as a core corporate responsibility, CCU's sustainability program is an important focus of the gift agreement. Gift funds will also provide support for athletic programs and fund scholarships. According to DeCenzo, the donation will be used to strengthen CCU's sustainability initiatives, support athletic programs, and provide endowed scholarships and summer school academic support.

All that really matters is if it produces wins on the field, without breaking any of the rules.

If Donald Trump decided he wanted to be a head football coach, and he asked CSU for the job, and he said he'd invest $50,000,000 into a new stadium/weightroom for us, then he'd personally hire Chad Morris away from Clemson for $10 million and pay Bud Foster $20 million to leave VT and come be our DC......and all he wanted was $100,000 a year in salary......well, then hell yes, BRING HIM HAHAHA!!!!!

Qualified or not....Coastal is winning, and nearing the top 10. He is getting the job done!
