It's a typical economic message of Catholic social justice advocates. Maryknollers in the US have been saying similar things for years.

As for the social issues, most Catholics I've talked to think Francis is on the right track.

Catholic conks here (Hen, Hogan, Andy) should be up in arms about this. Poor people have not worked hard enough and expect handouts. Sure this is what Jesus really meant. :thumb:

Yes. I was actually thinking about this exact thing when I saw Dave this morning. Dave is a homeless guy in my area who I see a couple times a month. He panhandles on a couple street corners on my commute. I always give him some money and talk to him for the 30 seconds the light is green. Always gives me pause as to why we are running in the rat race at all.

You choose to stay in the race. Your possessions and habits own you. Jesus would be appalled at you.

You are not living a truly christian life, as jesus taught. You are an exploitative capitalist who uses the church primarily for guilt relieve and to foster your self deception. It's one of the great things about the catholic church - you can shit on everybody, day in and day out, then go to the church confessional and wipe the slate clean.

REPORT: POPE EXCOMMUNICATES PRIEST FOR SUPPORTING GAY MARRIAGE, FEMALE PRIESTS
Breitbart ^ | Sept 24, 2013 | Susan Berry

Just days after a controversial interview with Pope Francis was published in the Jesuit magazine America, the pontiff has reportedly excommunicated a priest in Melbourne, Australia because of his support for female priests and gay marriage.

According to Barney Zwartz reporting at The Age in Victoria, dissident priest Greg Reynolds has been both defrocked and excommunicated over his support for women priests and same-sex marriage. Zwartz says that Reynolds believes he is the first person ever excommunicated in Melbourne.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. Al Swearengen

FATHER Greg Reynolds wants his church of dissident Catholics to welcome all - ''every man and his dog'', one might say, risking the non-inclusive language he deplores - but even he was taken aback when that was put to the test during Mass yesterday.

A first-time visitor arrived late at the Inclusive Catholics service in South Yarra with a large and well-trained German shepherd. When the consecrated bread and wine were passed around, the visitor took some bread and fed it to his dog.

AUSTRALIA
Newcastle Herald

By MICHELLE HARRIS Sept. 24, 2013

THE Maitland-Newcastle Diocese "simply overlooked" 25 years of paedophile priest Denis McAlinden's offending "in the interest of avoiding some scandal", the Special Commission of Inquiry has been told.

Barrister for Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox, Mark Cohen, told the inquiry on Tuesday morning McAlinden had been moved around almost constantly from diocese to diocese, and to PNG and New Zealand, from 1969 to the 1990s to ensure he was "kept out of the way".

By December 1971 it was observed McAlinden had left PNG because he was "very rough with the native people".

By May 1976, McAlinden had been "run out of town again"from Forster-Tuncurry "by angry parents", Mr Cohen said.

Father Denis McAlinden was a predator involved in horrific conduct, a lawyer for the Catholic Church has told an abuse inquiry.

But not all of the 30 times the pedophile priest was moved to new parishes around the country could be linked to his sexual abuse, lawyer Lachlan Gyles said.

'There were a large number of moves where no reason was known,' said Mr Gyles who's representing the Maitland/Newcastle Catholic diocese.

But the lawyer assisting the commission, Julia Lonergan, fired back 'Some moves related to sexual abuse.'

During a heated exchange, Mr Gyles replied 'And there were a large number unexplained.'

The inquiry before commissioner Margaret Cunneen is investigating the way church leaders and police handled child sexual abuse allegations against Hunter Valley priests Fr McAlinden and James Fletcher.

'We all accept he (McAlinden) was a predator involved in horrific conduct,' Mr Gyles said during the final day of submissions in the Newcastle Supreme Court on Wednesday.

During his summing up, Mr Gyles said cultural issues within the church hadn't prevented its leaders from reporting pedophile priests or suspected child sexual abuse by clergy.

'It was not a cultural disinclination to report,' he said.

'It was coming to terms (with the fact) that people were capable of doing the things that they were alleged to have done.'

Fr McAlinden, who died in 2005 of cancer in a West Australian Catholic home, is understood to have abused hundreds of Hunter Valley children over about 40 years.

Fr Fletcher died in jail in 2006 while serving a sentence for sexually assaulting an altar boy.

The inquiry was sparked by NSW detective chief inspector Peter Fox alleging a cover-up by church officials that was aided by a 'Catholic mafia' within the police force.

But Mr Gyles said church leaders were just as repulsed by child sexual abuse as other people in the community and were doing all they could to see that offences of the past were not repeated.

He also pointed out that child abuse extended to scout organisation, other religions and even foster parents.

Understanding of the issue was very different from the 1960s to the 1990s, compared to today when there is greater public awareness and better processes in place within the church to deal with it, he added.

Up until the 1990s, another major factor was that victims wanted church leaders rather than police to deal with their matters, Mr Gyles said.

Ms Cunneen has overseen more than two months of public hearings and more than 100 private hearings.

She is scheduled to report to the state government by February 28 next year.

Pope Francis said in the first peace message of his pontificate that huge salaries and bonuses are symptoms of an economy based on greed and inequality and called again for nations to narrow the wealth gap.

In his message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Peace, marked around the world on January 1, he also called for sharing of wealth and for nations to shrink the gap between rich and poor, more of whom are getting only "crumbs".

"The grave financial and economic crises of the present time ... have pushed man to seek satisfaction, happiness and security in consumption and earnings out of all proportion to the principles of a sound economy," he said.

"The succession of economic crises should lead to a timely rethinking of our models of economic development and to a change in lifestyles," he said.

Francis, who was named Time magazine's Person of the Year on Wednesday, has urged his own Church to be more fair, frugal and less pompous and to be closer to the poor and suffering.

His message will be sent to national leaders, international organizations such as the United Nations, and NGO's.

Titled "Fraternity, the Foundation and Pathway to Peace", the message also attacked injustice, human trafficking, organized crime and the weapons trade as obstacles to peace.

Anger at multi-million payouts for executives has swept across the globe as the economic crisis has deepened and the gap between the super-rich and the poor has widened.

But last month, Swiss voters rejected a proposal to cap the salaries of top executives at 12 times that of a company's lowest wage, heeding warnings from industry leaders that the measure could harm the country's economy.

CRUMBS

Francis said many places in the world were seeing a "serious rise" in inequality between people living side by side.

He attacked the "widening gap between those who have more and those who must be content with the crumbs", calling on governments to implement "effective policies" to guarantee people's fundamental rights, including access to capital, services, educational resources, healthcare and technology.

The new pope's style is characterized by frugality. He shunned the spacious papal apartment in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace to live in a small suite in a Vatican guest house, and he prefers a Ford Focus to the traditional pope's Mercedes.

A champion of the downtrodden, he visited the island of Lampedusa in southern Italy in July to pay tribute to hundreds of migrants who had died crossing the sea from North Africa.

Last month, in a document seen as a manifesto of his papacy, he attacked unfettered capitalism as "a new tyranny".

Since his election in March as the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, the Argentinian has several times condemned the "idolatry of money" and said it was a depressing sign of the times that a homeless person dying of exposure on the street was no longer news but a slight fall in the stock market is.
