Nine FBS Upsets

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

(Including two over transitional FBSers)

Towson 33, UConn 18 - Didn't pick it, but this one didn't shock me
S. Utah 22, S. Alabama 21 - USA isn't good, obviously, but SUU is expected near the bottom of the Big Sky
North Dakota St. 24, Kansas St. 21 - KSU isn't what they were last year, but this was somewhat surprising
Samford 31, Georgia St. 21 - :-| The only unexpected thing here was that it was close
E. Washington 49, Oregon St. 46 - Definitely didn't see this one coming, but this is hardly OSU's first Big Sky loss
McNeese St. 53, South Florida 21 - I picked this one, but obviously didn't expect 32 points
Northern Iowa 28, Iowa St. 20 - I picked this one, too
Eastern Illinois 40, San Diego St. 19 -                  Double
Montana 30, App State 6 - I suspected App was overrated, but I certainly thought they would score a touchdown

You don't include the transitionals because they are still considered I-AA. They don't count.

ESPN Sports Center just said there was 6.

I'm guessing they forgot South Alabama, who is now fully FBS.

First-year FBS transitionals are considered FCS opponents for FBS teams, while second-year FBS transitionals are considered FBS opponents. App is the former, I'm not sure which one Georgia State is. I don't believe FCS rules make a technical distinction between FCS & FBS opponents for playoff selection strength of schedule, etc.

Yeah, I wouldn't have included South Alabama, but still, a good showing from the FCS. Outside the top 25 and big FBS programs, the FCS actually isn't too inferior to the FBS when you look at things like this.

And FBS teams should stop scheduling North Dakota State. I have no idea how they get so good.

FCS represented very well this year. I think we might see a new wave of conferences "banning the scheduling of FCS programs".

Eh. Teams still need home games.

Personally, I would base it on schollie funding level.

HS football has grown at a much quicker rate than the number of FBS scholarships have. Kids that are good enough playing at the FBS level are ending up at FCS schools.

After watching NDSU take down Kansas State I was in the boat of thinking the season is over crown them. Saturday changed all that and now I'm excited as hell to see how this season pans out! Big Sky is going to be great with the Montana's and Eastern Washington. I think NDSU won't run the table in the Valley with the nice showings of its members namely Northern Iowa. CAA is going to be good again and the Southland was very impressive. I hope we see another big week of FBS upsets next week. I'm really want to see Sam Houston St. smack around Manziel.

I'll be keeping an eye on Central Arkansas at Colorado next week.

Agreed on the App. St. but they were absolutely supposed to win that game

I'll be checking on Montana State at SMU. The Bobcats will need a great showing, possibly a win, to keep pace with other top programs. Hard to believe what we all are talking about here.

I know right. I don't post as much, but I check in every once in a while. I also think that my thread has been taken down recently. I put it in the proper topic, now I can't find it anywhere.

It was a great week ... BUT

At the end of the season -- when all the chest-thumping has passed -- the FBS will still win 93% of their games against the FCS.

Giving up at least 22 scholarships, with lower quality training facilities, small travel budgets, and 100% of the games on the road.
