Charleston Southern 32 / The Citadel 29; Big South big wins

Post by bucs90 »

Great win for new coach Jamie Chadwell. CSU defense stood up twice in 4th qtr for the win. Many thought The Citadel would be a contender for the SoCon this year. CSU got some good breaks, but, good teams make those count and the Bucs did. Great win for the Big South too, and great DAY for the Big South: CSU beats Citadel, Coastal beats SC State, Gardner-Webb beats Furman.

3 of the best 1-AA programs in South Carolina's 1-AA history lost to Big South teams today.

Great job BSC!

Yep. Good day for the Big South. Knock off 3 of the SC traditional teams in Furman, Citadel, SC State. And Liberty almost beat Kent State, lost by 7. BSC showed well to open the season.

The Charleston paper is leading with "CSU shocks Citadel" and talks about how Citadel fans thought this would be their best season since the 1992 SoCon championship and #1 national ranking.

Huge win for CSU. Gotta build on it.

Wow, I will have a lot more respect for Chuck South now with this win. Then again, I don't know how good Citadel is.

Too bad VMI sucked it up today as usual.

It was more than that. Don't be such a homer. CSU was able to hang and the better team won. Two muffed punts don't blow a 16-0 lead. You guys were 6 for 15 in 3rd down conversions. Both teams were almost equal in number of offensive plays, CSU rushed for 139 Yds compared to 293. CSU threw for 141 yds compared to 88. You were inconsistent on rushing.

No excuses in football.

What really, truly cost The Citadel the game was......they scored 29 points and their opponent scored 32.

In the last 5 meetings, CSU has won 2, Citadel has won 3, and CSU may have just severely damaged The Citadel's shot at the best season since their 1992 SoCon championship, as this year with ASU and GSU being ineligible, and Wofford rebuilding after losing a lot of major players, Citadel had it all on the table for the taking. This is becoming a nice little rivalry.

It's always "crappy play calling" when play doesn't work.

Two fumbled punts that resulted in 14 points. Oh, and there was that Citadel TD that was called back on a questionable penalty. That's a 21 pt. swing.

I'm not going to take anything away from CSU. They came to play and they capitalized on our mistakes, which is what they are supposed to do. I'd rather lose this one early (as much as it stings) and get that wake up call now, rather than against a Samford or even WCU later.

Our mistakes are easily remedied. Can't do much about the lack of desire though. Hop Higgins does something about that.

The season starts next week.

At Liberty we really feel like we let the Kent State game slip through our fingers blowing the lead int eh 4th quarter. But the Big South really stepped up and can honestly claim superiority over the SoCon if only for a few days.

What was the game atmosphere like? I think it's cool to have a game between two schools that close together. Lots of potential for a lot of fun on a Saturday.

It's good. There is plenty of tailgating and a good crowd. It's Chas. South and the first game of the season so, you can get a decent crowd.

The game started out awful. The first quarter was absolutely brutal. It was a 50-yard field for most of the first half. The Citadel had us pinned deep for most of the first half. We had a long snap go over the punter's head through the end zone for a safety. It was bad. I was surprised that The Citadel did not capitalize. It could have and should have been a 21-0 Citadel lead after the first quarter, easily. After that, we started to hit our stride. Things came together and it was a great second half.

The Charleston Southern atmosphere was GREAT as the visiting fans. Our section was loud and proud. The students were there and were actively involved, standing up, cheering on their team. Our players played with passion, intensity, and attitude. They were engaging the students and fans from the sideline. Both were feeding off the other.

Charleston Southern Shocks The Citadel 32-29
“We just wanted to gain a little respect,” CSU quarterback Malcolm Dixon said, minutes after the clock ran out on the Bucs’ 32-29 upset of The Citadel on Saturday night. “We know this is a Citadel community, but we wanted to show that we are here too.”
This was no fluke, even though the 0-1 Bulldogs gifted the Bucs two touchdowns on punts muffed by Citadel slotback Vinny Miller. After rushing for just eight yards in the first half, Charleston Southern (1-0) pushed the Bulldogs’ defense around in the second half.
Charleston's Best: Buccaneers Rally for 32-29 Win Over The Citadel in Chadwell's Debut
The Jamey Chadwell era of Charleston Southern football began with a resounding bang on Saturday night
"I said when I first got here that our guys were going to play for 60 minutes and play with passion," Chadwell said following the Bucs' on-field celebration. "They fought for each other and the University and you saw what they did tonight. It's a great start for us and I'm proud for those guys."
"We knew they were pretty physical and they really surprised our offensive line with how physical they were up front and we struggled early," said Chadwell on the opening 20 minutes of the game, "But we hit a couple passes and made some plays and we took advantage of turnovers. They turned the ball over, we didn't and we took advantage and that helped make the difference. That's striking the stone."
"Those guys, it means everything to me for them because they've been through the ups and downs," said Chadwell on the efforts of his seniors in the opener. "It's been down a lot lately, but those guys, I can't be more thankful for them and what they mean to me in just the short amount of time I've been here, and what they mean to our program, and how they played tonight. They laid it on the line for Charleston Southern tonight."

The Bell Hops may have had a bit of the *Big Head* -- and first game jitters. No better time to rebound than this Sat against The Woffle.

Funny ... So far, I have not seen any bold predictions of a 3-TD victory this week (the Internet never forgets ...). Good luck, CSU, on the rest of your season ... except on the 28th of Sept!

When have you ever seen 3 TD predictions of El Cid over Wofford? That's a worse bet than predicting UTC will smash the world.

Another interesting fact from the Buccaneers' side of the football on Saturday.

You might think this was a veteran squad that was able to go into a hostile atmosphere and get a convincing win. Not the case.
Chadwell and his coaching staff were not the only new faces who made an impact in Charleston Southern's first opening day win since 2010. The Bucs' underclassmen and transfers played a critical role, particularly on the offensive side of the football. Four of CSU's starters on offense made their Division I debut. CSU also featured an offensive line with just one combined start outside of right guard Clayton Truitt's 16
