Watched the whole game on the big screen using my wife's Apple TV. South Florida's coach made a strategic error in sticking with his starting QB too long. McNeese just played everybody in the box and said "beat us with your QB." And South Florida's starter was awful. He played the whole first half and one series of the second. HIs first pass of the second was intercepted to set up a McNeese TD and make the score 40-7.

Next quarterback was much better. I think McNeese would still have had a decent shot to win if he'd played the whole game but it would've been a completely different game. Biggest thing was a pleasant surprise. The big question about McNeese this year was their offensive line as only one starter returned. But their new offensive line absolutely dominated South Florida's front seven. McNeese was able to run the ball right at them all night. Also only gave up one sack.

Kind of an asterisks by it because the new American Athletic Conference is of a caliber like Conference USA was a few years ago but it's still a BCS league conference in the last year of the BCS. So that's the first win ever for the Southland over a BCS league school.

Now we knock on wood and say our prayers and do whatever else we can to try to prevent the injury bug that's hit McNeese EVERY year of the Viator era from hitting again. McNeese started last year with a VERY good football team but got absolutely killed with season-ending injuries against Weber State. They were still fairly good after that but never close to what they were when they opened the season by dominating Middle Tennessee State.

Hopefully THIS year they'll stay at least RELATIVELY healthy. They'll need to because this year is probably the toughest the Southland's been in a long, long time.

Meanwhile aforementioned Weber State is putting it on Stephen F. Austin right now and McNeese has to play them in a few weeks.

Ok that means what I saw written, that McNeese now has the largest margin of victory by a FCS over a FBS, is deceptive if it's true at all. Could be literally true because it was "I-AA and I-A" back then. But not really true because it's just different labels for the same things.

Interesting looking back at that 63-23 win by Cal State Northridge over Boise State in 1997. The next week Boise State lost by only 28-24 to a pretty good Wisconsin team. You just never know what's going to happen week to week.

Game wasn't as close as the score, USF was totally outmanned. They have one "weapon" in their Running Back. I loved watching the faces of the crowd.

Well it's always kind of bugged me that the Southland never had a win over a BCS league school while the Big Sky, CAA, MVC, and Southern got them. There were some close calls but no cigars.

Now they have one. But the American Athletic Conference? Meh. I guess it's up to Sam Houston State to beat Texas A&M for the conference to get a real win over a BCS league team before the BCS era is on the ash heap of history.

In the unlikely event that were to happen even you coulndt put an asterisk on it. :D

The Lions play the Frogs next week as well.

The SLC definitely looks bigger at the top than it has in the last couple of years.

Actually it looks like the ripest opportunity to get a win over a team from one of the Big 5 conferences will be Central Arkansas going to Colorado...which is coming off a 1-10 2012 season that included a 30-28 loss to Sacramento State...next week. That one looks like a real possibility.

While I can revel in the moment, cool stuff from the official McNeese athletics site:

Image
The 53 points scored were the most by a FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) team over a BCS (Bowl Championship Subdivision) automatic qualifying squad while the 32-point margin of victory also set a new record.

Facts about the win:
• In McNeese's first four possessions, the Cowboys punted three times and threw an interception. McNeese had nine possessions the rest of the game and scored in all nine – six touchdowns and three field goals.
• A new look offensive line, featuring one returning starter, two who converted from the defensive line, and two more seeing their first starting action – allowed zero sacks against a defensive front that was billed as a powerful unit including consisting of a freshman all-American.
• Tight end Nic Jacobs set a single-game school record as a tight end with two touchdown receptions against USF. His 78-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter tied a school record for longest TD reception by a tight end.
• Sophomore tailback Dylan Long scored his first career touchdown on his first career rush when he scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter to give McNeese a 16-7 lead.
• After falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, McNeese scored 40 straight points, including 31 in the second quarter.
• Those 31 points in the second quarter is the second most scored in a quarter in school history. The most was 35 points scored in the first quarter of a 66-17 win over Southern Utah in 1998.
• The victory was the first-ever by a Southland Conference team over a BCS AQ squad.

This game is the largest margin over a BCS, though.
