Is JMU the only other I-AA school besides UNI with purple and gold as school colors? Purple pants & jersey, gold helmet doesn't look bad:

Alternate home/away, purple pants, gold jersey. For away the gold clashes enough with some other teams' solids. Off the top of my head used these @ UMass 11' and @ URI last season:
Primary away purple pants/white top (but at a recent home game)
Alternate away all white (have also worn at home)

WCU and Western Illinois also use purple and gold

without a gold helmet - which UNI will never wear
I had a similar combo in high school, and a purple helmet with it would have been terrible.
Random photo of the team from last season
We've done the gold jersey for homecoming. Looks terrible. That was back with old gold for the color though. The big downside
to our current yellow is it's to close to university of Iowa and Iowa State to use too much of and still be our own.
I'll see if i can find a photo of that uniform
Why wouldn't UNI ever use a gold helmet?
Why would UNI use yellow? I just looked real quick on wiki and it says UNI's colors are purple and gold. Is that wrong?

Why UNI switched to the yellow I don't know. The official school colors are listed as purple and gold. UNI used to use the old gold color (JMU, WCU, Washington,etc...) until about 2000.
I don't know why we made the switch to yellow gold instead of old gold. I would much rather have the old gold. The yellow gold (especially when put with shitty black uniforms) looks just like the fucking Hawkeyes.
As for the black issue - there is much contention between the UNI fan base over the use of black. It was used heavily with the football team from 2000 until the 2011 season
I honestly didn't hate the look. Then I saw how nice the purple top white pant looks
However, UNI's athletic director has come out and said that they are making a strong move away from black and into only purple, yellow, and white.
To see black come back as, apparently, a full time-ish thing is disappointing.
As a one off, sure. Not full time.
