What Liberals (such as myself) always conveniently neglect to mention about the attractive idea of eliminating oil company tax breaks - is that without an accompanying decrease in across-the-board rates, it’s really just a dysfunctional way of hiking taxes.... (am I right) Which is of course the goal

Liberals (such as myself) don’t want revenue neutrality
Secretly we want more revenue to pay for big-government stuff
and if anybody is honestly convinced that those (effective) tax hikes would come from the fat cats ill gotten gains rather than the backs of everyday consumers (which is, I might add, is everybody) they’re simply delusional...

That's why I say:
Gas should be $8 bucks a gallon
Gas as $8 a gallon would be absolutely crush our economy. EVERYTHING would go up in costs- not just to fill your tank but airline tickets, food, clothing, manufactured goods, services...Would hurt the poor and middle class the most, the people liberals love to profess the most. And if you think oil company profits are high now, Imagine what they would be at $8 a gallon....
The high cost of transporting unripe food CA from would open up local markets to small non-corporate farmers and bring back the small-acreage family farms. :thumb:

I think you didn't quite understand my post...
removing ALL Oil and Energy subsidies funds loopholes and giveaways across the board would give us a truer picture of the real cost of gas at the pump and indeed hit the poor the hardest (agreed)

But artificially buying down the price of gas (for the last 50 years) has created a huge cushion for the automotive industry / an industry in which America is now no longer competitive / If Americans didn't buy "American" due to guilt and misplaced pride the U.S. automobile industry would be gone in a month

Buying down fuel prices has radically stunted mass-transit growth
we are now a giant country with virtually no effective ground mass-transportation system in place
Far too many (damn near every) American MUST own a car to be properly employed
Thus trapped in the cycle of buy-down fuel prices

Buying down fuel real costs has artificially lowered food storage and food transportation
creating a HUGE fast food Nation and slowly destroyed short range local food distribution

I could go on and on and on...
artificially buying down gas at the pump and buying down fuel costs has changed the face of this country
and had a huge range of implications and NOT always for the better

It's far far too late now to remove our "buy-down" fuel prices...
We've built an entire nation around it
It would reorganize our country / painfully and most likely destructively

Our fearless leaders handed out 78 billion in federal tax breaks to U.S. oil companies in 2011
Let that sink in for a few seconds / reports show that in 2010 there were over 800 Oil Lobbyists in Washington

Everybody has their hands in the pie
Link please. I googled it and came up with a 78 billion number that is a 2011-2015 projection. $31 billion of it is to ethanol, which I would hardly call big oil. And 23 billion are general business deductions that aren't oil specific.

2 things gentlemen:
Archer Daniels Midland is the United States largest Ethanol producer
They are a commodities trading company (as well) and perform billions of dollars annually in Oil transactions
They are the left hand of the US Oil industry

Secondly
the real loopholes and funding and "research monies" and support for our OIL BASED Economy is far more than $78 Billion... and read my follow-up post from this boys

Oh.. I just found this little nugget:
According to a 1995 report by the libertarian think tank Cato Institute, "ADM has cost the American economy billions of dollars since 1980 and has indirectly cost Americans tens of billions of dollars in higher prices and higher taxes over that same period. At least 43 percent of ADM's annual profits are from products heavily subsidized or protected by the American government. Moreover, every $1 of profits earned by ADM's corn sweetener operation costs consumers $10, and every $1 of profits earned by its bioethanol operation costs taxpayers $30."[25]

Give all the northern border states to Canada, Florida to Cuba, sell the Louisiana purchase back to France, call Zorin Industries to do away with California, let Texas finally have their independence and let's get back to the original 13. :thumb:

Food stamp rolls are growing seventy-five times as fast as employment. The national debt has increased by 50% under Barack Obama. Obama promised to reduce health insurance bills for an average American family by $2,500 per year, instead your health bills went up by $3,000 per year.

Meanwhile, labor participation by men is at the lowest rate ever measured – since they started tracking it in 1948. And here’s the clincher: 90 million able-bodied, working-age Americans are not working.

And if you think help is on the way, I've got a bridge to sell you ... in Detroit. The biggest American city to ever go bankrupt, Detroit, has been run by Democrats since 1962. That's over half a century of 100% Democrat rule, using the exact same policies as Obama.

The city is now in ruins. Detroit leads the nation in illiteracy, welfare, food stamps, violent crime, murder, abandoned properties, and broken street lights.

The city of Detroit’s downfall is built around four core ideas: never-ending entitlement spending, the most government employees per capita of any city in America, monstrous debt, and the highest property taxes in America.

But wait, isn’t that Obama’s exact prescription for the nation? High taxes, more spending, more debt, and more government employees. Bingo. Help isn’t coming folks. The cavalry isn’t riding in to save us. They are coming to destroy us.

Detroit is certainly the future of America under Obama. It’s the exact same policies. We are experiencing Groundhog Day -- doing the same stupid things, and expecting a different result.

One last morsel of food for thought: The EU is in the middle of a Great Depression. Countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Greece and Cyprus face total disaster. Their economies are ruined for generations to come.

Yet America under Obama now has more debt than every country in the European Union-combined. Our country has more government debt than any country in the history of the world.

Say goodbye to the U.S. economy. It’s been nice while it lasted.

I remember reading somewhere that the United States is one of only a handful (or a thimble) of countries that requires its Foreign Nationals to pay taxes to maintain citizenship.
