In spite of the prosecution stepping on their own collective sacks in this case, Al is charging forward.
I distinctly remember the day that attorney Benjamin Crump and the parents of deceased victim Trayvon Martin approached me and asked that I use the power of NAN to bring national attention to the fact that their son's alleged killer, George Zimmerman, had in effect been exonerated by the Sanford Police Department before they even buried their young child. I was not aware of the incident, but was outraged when I learned that the police let Zimmerman go free the night of the shooting because of his version of a story that he had told them. The Sanford police let this man walk away before they even identified the body of the victim, or before they could decipher whether or not Zimmerman had been in a feud with the deceased, or any number of different scenarios. Zimmerman was told that he could go home, and return to the tragic scene the next day and recount what took place. Trayvon's parents, their attorney and members of the community were furious and said the Sanford police would have never behaved in this manner were the victim White. Their contention and mine never was that Zimmerman's actions were race-based, but rather that the police department's actions and mishandling of the situation were race-based. Given the history of Sanford PD, their objections seemed well placed.

So can anyone tell me why there is only 6 jurors instead of 12? Never heard of such a thing before (in a murder trial).

Florida law dictates six jurors in non-capital cases.

It's not a capital case (I think).
But still, I thought all felony trials, much less murder, had to have 12 jurors. Heck, I sat in on a 2nd degree murder trial in VA. Had 12 jurors.

So basically most felony trials in Fl have only 6 jurors. Damn, must be a lot easier in FL to get felony convictions. Its obviously easier to get 6 people to unanimously agree on something than 12. 1st I've ever heard of it. Very surprised that this is even allowed. Any other states allow this?

Connecticut is the only other one. The SCOTUS ruled it was okay in 1970 citing that the only reason twelve jurors is widely used is 'cause of tradition dating back to 12th century English law.

edit: I'm assuming if a state ever decided to, we could theoretically see a jury of less than six...or anything between six and twelve...or even more.

Nevermind- I misremembered. It was a long time ago. Involved the murder of 2 JMU students in 1996. It was originally a capital murder & 1st degree murder trial in early 1998. After 1st trial ended in hung jury, defendant entered Alford plea to 2 counts of 2nd degree murder. The 2nd degree murder is what I had remembered.....

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Releases PSA Asking People Not To Riot After Zimmerman Verdict…
Via Broward Sheriff’s Office:
Date: July 8, 2013
PIO Number: 13-7-9
The Broward Sheriff’s Office, working closely with the Sanford Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies, has coordinated a response plan in anticipation of the verdict.

Freedom of expression is a constitutional right. While raising your voice is encouraged, using your hands is not. BSO has created a public service announcement with the help of kids from the Jason Taylor Foundation, H.A.N.D.Y. (Helping Abused, Neglected, Disadvantaged Youth) and basketball star James Jones of the championship Miami Heat team urging young people not to let their emotions get the best of them.

“We don’t have information about a specific event that might take place at the conclusion of the trial, but we encourage everyone to keep any protests peaceful,” Sheriff Scott Israel said.

Members of the BSO Strategic Investigation Division have been monitoring the pulse of the situation, maintaining open lines of communication with community leaders, civic activists, members of the clergy, as well as local, state and federal agencies.

I was just wondering if cases without national media attention went faster. I know Zimm is in week 3. Not sure how long the jury was sequestered even before Day 1.

Man, I Wiki'ed the OJ Simpson trial. I knew it was long but good God:

Primary jury sworn in - 11/2/94

Just got a chance to read today's trial blog. Summary:

Some IT geek was called to show his 3D simulation of the shooting. He can't get his laptop to work with the court projector because he has a Mac. He ended up showing the video on his laptop.

Second witness, who has been on the stand most of the day, is a forensic pathologist and he is making a very strong case in favor of Zimmerman. Among other things, he testified that because the backdrop was flat concrete, Zimmerman's head was likely thrown against the ground violently, as flat surface doesn't do as much damage as gravel, etc. Confirms broken nose. Says Zimmerman was likely stunned severely by the head blows, at least six. Says Martin was shot at essentially point blank range. Gun directly on hoodie and 2-4 inches from Martin's skin. Says the damage to Martin's skin is no-brainer consistent with that scenario. Also says the police botched the evidence. Martin's hoodie wasn't stored properly. Smelled like mold once unbagged. Any DNA evidence or lack thereof is basically worthless.

Sure they'll admit it and they're right about both Sarpton and ol' Hymietown Jackson.

But he's right about the cops; if Zimmerman had died Martin would have gone straight to jail and never have seen daylight again.

I thought the Hymietown quote was Sharpton? Then I looked it up and you're right- it was Jackson.

Re: the Sanford Police- if this incident had been reversed and it had happened in Charleston (I can't speak for other jurisdictions), it would have had the same outcome provided that Trayvon was in lawful possession of the gun like Zimmerman was. I have been on scene at one self defense shooting where the shooter was black. We detained him, but once we got it sorted out he was released. We were criticized for detaining him, but nothing said about the fact that we cut him loose.

In another instance, we had a Merita bread truck driver who was white who shot a black guy trying to rob him. We detained him also, then released him, and the local little Sharptons said the same thing... that had the shooter been black he would have been in jail. Later, a friend of the dead robber and some of his compatriots began making threats towards the police as a result of the aftermath of the shooting. Weeks later, one of them murdered two EMTs at a crash scene, and then he went on to murder one of my fellow cops and a friend, Dennis LaPage.

So I reject the blanket idea that if the situation had been reversed that Trayvon Martin would never have seen the light of day. The same agitating forces that brought a 2nd degree murder charge against Zimmerman would have also freed Martin; provided that he was legal, as Zimmerman was.

I looked that up. The 2 EMTs were shot right near MUSC- one was killed and one survived. Damn-my younger sister was living in Charleston at the time and working at MUSC (she graduated from the College of Charleston). She may have mentioned it back then- I don't remember. I'll ask her.

I see the scumbag was soon caught and avoided the death penalty for what was described as cold blooded murders of the EMT and officer by pleading guilty but mentally ill. What a crock.
