The Furlough Thread
I'm putting this into Politics because some nimrod will turn it political...Over/Under is within three post...
But I thought I'd capture thoughts on how my furlough is going...
Today is Day one of 11...Lots of agencies are dictating when its civilian workers must take their furlough days, but my agency is allowing us to select our days as long as everybody doesn't pile on to one day...
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are the most selected...I took a hybrid of these...
The rules are simple...we must take one day a week, two a pay period (two weeks)...so I'm taking the Friday of the first week of the pay period and the Monday of the second week. That way, every other week is a four day weekend.
DoD civilians have to take 11 furlough days, so with the odd number, we are starting in the second week of this pay period...thus I'm off today...
We cannot have any contact with the office...I'm not allowed to even use by company BlackBerry...we cannot work extra hours to make up for lost work...we can't make up the lost $$$ by earning comp time...and we cannot use vacation time in lieu of furlough...we must lose 8 hours of pay each week...
Our management cannot make us work longer hours before or after to make up lost work either...
I've made good use of the day, fixing a cabinet, arranging a painter to go to our new house, taking the wife to the airport...now, I'm just goofing off before 4PM appointment at the new house with the painter...
93Hen is also facing the same furlough rules as I am, but I'm not sure how many other CS posters are in the same boat as us...
I'm OK with the furlough, at least as OK as someone losing 20% of my weekly pay can be...I just wish they would spread is out over more federal workers in more agencies...
Political Appointees are exempt from furlough...at least that's what OPM's Furlough FAQ page says...
So, that's about it for now...Hope everyone is having a nice day...

Why does a 5% cut of a 7% increase result in a 20% reduction in salaries?

Why is the govt furloughing employees? There's was enough $ for Obama to just take a $100 million trip to Africa...

D, you really need to control that anger..,otherwise you'll be in the cardio ward in the bed next to your brother...
I'm at peace, knowing I work with productive people, while you let the anger of working with the takers of the world build up in you like a pressure cooker...it's just not healthy, and I worry about you...
Tom, no one ever claimed that math was the strong suit of Congress or this Administration...all I know is I lose 8hours of pay a week or 20%...I'll survive, but for thousands of DoD civilians, especially those in lower pay grades, it will be tough...

Lower pay grades? Oh, those only making 6 figures to sit on ass and watch TV? Full pension and lifetime cadillac health.
Go fuck yourself again, you worthless welfare whore.
Re: The Furlough Thread
Not totally furlough related but I lost out on a highly sought after position with USGS in Columbia, MO due to a hiring freeze. No suckling at the government teet for this guy... as I weigh my employment options and pine for a job at a private uni in the south that is restarting FCS football.

Sometimes your ignorance reaches monumental proportions...how about the single mom GS-9, who still has to pay her $96 a pay period for health care, despite losing 20% of her $2250 check (before taxes and deductions per the OPM pay scale for DC)...D1B wrote:Col Hogan wrote:D, you really need to control that anger..,otherwise you'll be in the cardio ward in the bed next to your brother...

Go **** yourself again, you worthless welfare whore.
That $96 for health care gets her the bottom rung program...not Cadillac...that would cost her a whole bunch more...
I bet you believe we get all that stuff for free...don't you...come on, you can admit you don't know...

Lifetime job security, benefits are still better than the average private sector worker, nothing is expected of her as far as working hard and achieving goals, lifetime pension, lifetime health, still criminally overpaid for what she does.Col Hogan wrote:Sometimes your ignorance reaches monumental proportions...how about the single mom GS-9, who still has to pay her $96 a pay period for health care, despite losing 20% of her $2250 check (before taxes and deductions per the OPM pay scale for DC)...D1B wrote:

My brother, a contractor, is being furloughed starting this week. He supports the USMC and they've extended the furlough to many of the contractors. As I stated in the other thread, my Gov't clients and my team escaped furloughs. I know we got lucky.

So, do you want companies like SAIC, Boeing, CGI, Booz Allen Hamilton, Barling Bay, SRC to absorb all the work that the government needs to do?D1B wrote:Lifetime job security, benefits are still better than the average private sector worker, nothing is expected of her as far as working hard and achieving goals, lifetime pension, lifetime health, still criminally overpaid for what she does.Col Hogan wrote: Sometimes your ignorance reaches monumental proportions...how about the single mom GS-9, who still has to pay her $96 a pay period for health care, despite losing 20% of her $2250 check (before taxes and deductions per the OPM pay scale for DC)...

just the opposite - if we didn't outsource our security and intel, we'd have plenty of money not to furlough.
Companies like yours (no offense to you, you are just doing your job) are leaches on the American Public.
Security, Prisons, Intel, etc are items that NEVER should be outsourced.

So you don't want to a private company to do the work but you also don't want the government to do it. Tell me how that works? That makes no sense.

You can't call my company a leach and not include me in that. Besides, saying "no offense" is ridiculous. "Hey, no offense, but I don't know what you do but I wish you wouldn't do it. You're not a leach, just the people that hire you."

Reading comprehension. That is not what I said. I said it should NOT be outsourced. The money saved would more than make up for the non-furloughed costs
Re: The Furlough Thread
I read what you wrote. The US government shouldn't outsource to the leaches aka private industry. With about 3.1 million government and military employees, do you want the US Government to absorb the other approx. 3 million defense contractors? Or do you want some jobs gov't and some others private. I can tell you, not many contractors (if any) are actually reading intel. They are probably developing, installing, managing and updates the computer systems and networks.dbackjon wrote:Ibanez wrote:

All should be employees of the US Government. Of course, we don't need 6.1 million defense employees.
Re: The Furlough Thread
There is only about 3 million defense contractors. Keep in mind, Defense contractors do more than Defense. There's Civil/Security/Defense positions. Jobs with the IRS, DoD, NOAA, Department of Interior, DHS, etc...dbackjon wrote:Ibanez wrote: I read what you wrote. The US government shouldn't outsource to the leaches aka private industry.
