people value "feeling safe" over the fact that they are losing liberties day after day. Sad.

Re: Ron Paul Blasts NSA Backers: You're Justifying Dictators
What I'd say is that we're facilitating potential for totalitarianism. What we've done, in the name of feeling secure, is allow law enforcement at all levels to develop capabilities such that there would be no hope if totalitarianism evolves. The mechanisms for complete suppression of the people are there.
This country is only 237 years old. That is a heartbeat in the context of history. And the national government has already evolved into something far more powerful and controlling than the people who started the country intended for it to be. We have a class of bureaucrats who are largely independent of elected officials and unaccountable. And they can engage in things that can only be described as tyranny at times. We are a long way from totalitarianism. But we are arguably evolving in that direction.
I first really started really thinking about just how impossible it would be to break the bonds of control if there were a reason to do so some years back when law enforcement caught anti abortion activist James C. Kopp after he killed an abortion doctor through a sniper shooting. Law enforcement linked him to the crime by virtue of finding a hair near the scene and using DNA. A hair.
Now, think about it. It's great that they can catch a killer. But what kind of hope would their be if there is a totalitarian government with that kind of capability at its disposal. Add all of the other capabilities as well. The surveillance capability. The data mining capability. So on and so forth. It would be impossible for any kind of resistance movement to develop and gain momentum.
We've created a monster. Or rather we've allowed a monster to develop when it should've been killed in its crib. Right now its a relatively benevolent monster. Relatively. But it can crush us with one finger if it becomes inclined to do so as it develops further. And there would be no hope.

Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I wonder where all the anti- national ID card people are? The ones who claim that a national ID takes us towards a police state? They are usually liberal or libertarian (I'm one of those two). Seems like the libertarians are raising hell but the liberals are mostly quiet. There are a few out there whose integrity is consistent, but most of them are carrying water for their side.

And they are morons. But you might be confusing liberals with democrats which of course is the problem with labels. Kinda like saying George Bush was conservative.CID1990 wrote:I wonder where all the anti- national ID card people are? The ones who claim that a national ID takes us towards a police state? There are plenty of (let's just call them) left leaning pundits and commentators who are all over this. But you won't see them get much exposure from the establishment media.

When the candidate who raises the most money wins 90 some % of the time and 90% of the time that's the incumbent, you get entrenched power and candidates who no longer have to listen to the people or for that matter, the constitution. Lobbyists and fellow congressman become their constituency and they feel pretty damn comfortable of their chances for re-election. Campaign finance reform will go a long way to helping this.JohnStOnge wrote:What I'd say is that we're facilitating potential for totalitarianism. CFR will never happen in mine or your lifetimes. Our government's actions boil down to one word. PRIDE. And it is the deadliest of all sins.
