People get to define themselves in any way they see fit.
I suppose in their own minds they can make themselves believe they are something they are not. So in their own minds I guess they can define themselves as such. But they're still not that "something." A person who is not born a woman can define themselves in their own mind as a woman. But they still won't be a woman. They're just deluding themselves.

Me, I think that the society has gone overboard on tolerance of aberrant behavior. I'm not saying I think it should be illegal, for instance, for a man to try to assume the appearance of being a woman if he wants to. I'm saying that I think that the society should informally send a clear and unambiguous message that you're going to be viewed as a weirdo if you do that. I don't think the society should pander to such people by calling them "she" and such. Society should act consistent with the fact that it's a mutilated man; not a woman.

And I think that if society did that fewer people would go down that road.

Kind of reminds me of teen aged pregnancy. When my Mom was a teen girl a girl who got pregnant out of wedlock was a pariah. There was no law against it. But there was tremendous social pressure not to do it. And a whole lot fewer teenaged girls got pregnant.

Over time the society became more tolerant of teen aged pregnancy. Started thinking about not making pregnant teen aged girls feel bad about themselves and such. In some circumstances being pregnant even became somewhat of a status symbol.

And I think that's one reason why we have a lot more teen aged pregnancy right now. The informal social pressure against it largely went away. The way it was in my Mom's day was cruel to girls who DID get pregnant. But the result was that fewer girls got themselves into that situation.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
