Grade Your Thrower

Post by Beardown »

How would you grade your starting QB in the following categories?

Arm Strength, Mobility, Accuracy, IQ, Leadership, Intangibles (or will to win).

For UNC's Seth Lobato, I would give him the following:

Arm Strength: A- (best part of his game)

Mobility: C (He's fast, but he looks like a tree trunk in the pocket)

Accuracy: B- (He's getting better, but needs to work on his touch)

IQ: B (Seems like a student of the game)

Leadership: A (He's the first at practice, last to go home)

Intangibles: B (UNC is improving and large degree has to do with #9)

If we can some how get an average or above average line in front of Lobato, I think he's NFL talent. He's big 6 foot 5 inches and about 230 LBS, and a strong arm. Needs to work on accuracy though.

Josh Woodrum, Liberty

Arm Strength: B+
Mobility: B+
Accuracy: C+ He made his share of throws that he shouldn't have
IQ: B- He was a freshman but he definitely was a quick learner as the season progressed
Leadership: A- He took command of the team from Montana game on last year and now is a captain as a redshirt sophomore
Intangibles: B+

Arm strength...B- awkward throwing motion at times and appears to be the weakest armed QB we've had in quite awhile. Was perhaps bailed out last year a little by the receiving corps.

Mobility...A+ almost a Taiwan Jones type of sixth sense, escapability, and vision.

Accuracy...B despite the release was able to make some highly accurate throws - especially on go routes.

IQ...? seems to be more instinctual/improvisational but hasn't appeared mistake prone either.

Leadership...B+ seemed to rally the upper class men around him pretty well-even under duress- as a redshirt freshman.

Intangibles.. All you have to do is look at that ridiculous scramble that led to a TD to Edwards vs SAC to realize he has "it". Besides, it's Eastern, Baldwin is his coach, and Zach Hill is his position coach...

We've obviously been very blessed at QB over the last decade with highly accurate passers in Meyer and Nichols, great es capability in Meyers, great smarts in Nichols, and simply clutch with BLM. This evolution will be fun to watch.

WOW. There are some GREAT QB's out there this year. I don't know if any FCS team will have a loss before the playoffs start.

Our guy was on the Payton watch last year - should he get D's across the board? :?

Let's hear what MSU has then. Given the other comments I would expect nothing higher than a D+ or he wouldn't be playing FCS. :coffee:

Arm Strength: B+ (He can throw the ball far, but doesn't put enough air under it)

Mobility: B ( very mobile, but not real true break-away speed)

Accuracy: A- (one of his best attributes)

IQ: A (very smart)

Leadership: A

Intangibles: A am going with a B-/C+ on this. He could end up ranked 1st for many Big Sky Record lists, but at times he seems to lose that creativity that we saw in the first year or two. And it seems that by the end of the year we are not as dynamic as at the beginning. I am not putting this all on him, but some of it is he tends to rely on 1-2 players and not let the offense just flow.

Again these are just MY opinions, but I think it is pretty UN-biased (especially for someone as biased as me)

he definitely has a Cannon but i only give it a B
Mobility: B ( very mobile, but not real true break-away speed)
His Dual threat is one of his best attributes, when he finally makes the decision to bring the ball down B+
Accuracy: A- (one of his best attributes)
Needs work under pressure B
IQ: A (very smart)
High FB IQ, but needs to make quicker decisions B
Leadership: A
His teammates definitely respect him and he is the leader of the team, but sometimes he forgets that he is the star and HE needs to make something happen B+

He has to take control in clutch situations and win the big games C

I'd agree with most of that. But he really does have a very strong arm. His accuracy detracts from it though.

Being that Old Dominion is officially FCS for one more season (although ineligible for the playoffs), I could throw out the grades for Taylor Heinicke. But that might burst a lot of bubbles around here, so I won't. :coffee:

Just gonna get this out of the way.

Jordan Johnson

Arm Strength: C-

There's word that he's gotten a lot stronger, but until I see it, I have to go off 2011. He couldn't seem to chuck it more than 40-45 yards, and really gunned it out just to get it there.

Mobility: A

He led the team in rushing in the final two games he played (playoffs), and I've never seen a QB with his insane ability to get away from defenders. He took 3 sacks total in 2011. His mobility was a huge part of that.

Accuracy: B

It could definitely be better. The scary thing is how accurate he is under pressure. His long TD in the ISU game, his many TDs in the Weber game, his clutch TDs in the MSU and UNI games, and his picking apart of the SHSU secondary when we were way behind was pretty amazing. Hopefully the beginning of 2011 was all a learning experience, and he'll come out like he did in the last 6 games he played.

IQ: B-

Another reason he only took 3 sacks (and why his completion % was less than 60%) was that he threw the ball away in many critical situations to avoid a sack and reset the offense. Really good football IQ, but outside of football, that jury is still out (ha ha  ).

Leadership: A

I think this showed a ton last year in his absence. The team (especially the offense) was a complete mess. He is the guy on this football team.

Intangibles: B-

He's a tough kid, but he gets hurt pretty easily, and I don't see him starting and finishing every game for us this year. He spent a large part of the beginning of 2011 hurt, and got hurt again this spring. Although, if he can stay healthy all year and get dialed in with his receivers, he could threaten the Payton Award.
