Went to to the Dover race (3rd time at Dover). Previously in Fall 07' race had sat frontstretch lower section just out of turn 4, and in Spring 10' race sat Upper Section of Turn 1.

On Sunday sat in upper section Turn 3. Upper section Turn tickets bought within a month of the race were $95, more than lower section Turns and the frontstretch. Pretty good view from up there. Can easily see the whole track, unlike sitting in the lower section Turns, and don't have to look left and right the whole race like you do if sitting on the frontstretch. Turn 3, the southwest corner, the sun is above and then behind you for the race, so you don't have it in your face like Turns 1 & 2. That helps when it's hot like it was Sat- about 90.

Rented a scanner & headphones- makes watching & listening to the race much better.

NASCAR no longer providing attendace. Track's capacity downsized from 133k to 113k when they increased seat width from 18 to 22 inches. Frontstretch look pretty full, turns were pretty sparse, and 8 sections in the turns (about 6k seats) were covered with ads. I was guessing most of the race 60-70k butts in seats, 80k at track (always some at bathrooms, concessions, fanzone, concourses, etc). Delaware columnist estimated 75k:
Image
http://www.delawareonline.com/article/2 ... e-Sunday-s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Was actually more people in there well after race started than at beginning of race. Took way longer to get in than previous 2 trips. I got to my seats just after the national anthem. God forbid if had been 113k people there- Would have missed half the race. Not enough staff. FAIL on Dover's part:

Trust me BDKJMU, it's a lot easier now than when they allowed infield campers, only had one garage area, and had 170,000 on race day. I've been going every year since the mid 70's (save for my military years in the 90s) and remember when they were ecstatic with a 22,000 sellout. Delaware Stadium was drawing more. :D

A tip for your future trip: stay in the left lane on Rt 1 south and drive right on by the track. Take the 113 north exit and park at the Blue Hen Corporate Center (formerly Blue Hen Mall). Pay your $20 and take the DART race bus to the track. They have a reserved lane back up Rt 1 and drop you off in front of Miles the Monster. Same pickup point after the race. You'll be at your car in 20 minutes. Go south on Rt 1 past Dover AFB and you'll have a stress free ride up DE Rt 9. Lots of farms and marshland all way up to New Castle County. If you get bored anywhere along the ride, take any of the left turns back over to Rt 1.

In the pic you posted, I was sitting in the top row right where the pace car is. Family has had those 8 seats since year one of Dover, 1969. We used to park in a friend's yard right outside the start/finish gate until they eminent-domained all those houses. We always have an extra couple of seats, so if you give me a month's notice I have a spot for you.

Here's a pic from the early 80s. Notice no stands in the turns. Infield packed to the gills, as it was nominal parking fee and no ticket. Catch fence only on the front straight and in front of the horse track grandstand on the backstretch. No turn 4 medical center. No SAFER barrier on the walls and two tractor tires painted white were the only thing between car and the inner wall. Shorter pit road that had an unlimited speed limit :D :

And of course here's what the Monster Mile looked like on race day before the economy tanked:

Thanks 93. Ironically I think that’s what we did in 07’ Fall race. That might have been the last time that the race had over 100k in attendance? There was 4 of us in my truck. We got stuck in a brutal hr or so traffic jam as we got close to Dover. I remember that we drove past the track, past the sea of RVs, and parked in some parking lot- must have been the Blue Hen Corporate Center. I think we had about an hr for a short tailgate before walking over to a shuttle pickup area. And I believe the traffic was pretty bad leaving as we must have drove Rt 1 back past the track.

In the Spring 2010 race my I got a AAA package for my brother and I that consisted of 2 tickets, 2 trackside tour passes, and parking in a lot right by the casino. Think we left earlier than in 07’, the crowd was much smaller, and traffic wasn’t nearly as bad going in, and we tailgated afterwards so it wasn’t as bad going out.

This past Sunday I bought the ticket the night before last minute, and went by myself. Didn’t pull out of a Wawa near where I live till about 0845. Thought for sure I was going to get majorly stuck a shore and race traffic jam, but what would normally take about 1 ¼ hr drive only took 1.5 hrs.

Race ended about 4:30. Took my time getting back to my truck parked about ¼ mile off of Turn 2- got there about 5:10. Vehicles behind where I was parked that were trying to leave didn’t move at all till about 5:40, and it wasn’t till about 6:15 that a lot of traffic began to move out of the parking area. I just sat there and tailgated till 6:45, talking with a guy I met parked near me who went to Towson.

Ironically, the Fall race is 9/29. JMU is @ UD 9/28, 6 PM, which should be televised. I’m not sure if I’ll go that Dover race, as probably won’t get back from the JMU/UD game till late that Sat night. But if I know a month out if I'm definitely going and who if anyone is going with me, might have to take you up on the offer.

Went to the race today. Weather in the Poconos beautiful. Not nearly as hot as Dover last week. Had a pit pass which was pretty cool. Good crowd. From my vantage point (highest row, Club level) front stretch looked pretty full. If included the infield wonder if the crowd topped 100k?

Damn Johnson's car was dominant. Don't see someone that dominant every race. Junior had a good day finishing 3rd.

Results.
1 Jimmie Johnson Chevrolet
2 Greg Biffle Ford
3 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chevrolet
4 Tony Stewart Chevrolet
5 Ryan Newman Chevrolet
6 Kyle Busch Toyota
7 Kurt Busch Chevrolet
8 Denny Hamlin Toyota
9 Kevin Harvick Chevrolet
10 Joey Logano Ford

Chevy's dominated. Or really should say Hendrick engines dominated with 4 of the top 5 running Hendrick engines (Stewart-Haas drivers Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman use Hendrick motors). No surprise. Toyota engines have been great this season- when they weren't blowing up. Day before the race:

Hendrick had certainly the 2 best cars in the race with Johnson and Kahne, and probably the 3 best cars if you include Earnhardt, yet had its worst day since 2005:

-Gordon wrecked on lap 5 when Bobby Labonte spun out, and finished 39th.
-Kahne was leading the race when he blew a right front tire, slamming into the wall and bursting into flames, on lap 104 (of 200) and finished 37th.
-Earnhardt was leading the race when he dropped a cylinder on lap 127, and finished 38th.
-Johnson led 18 laps and was running 2nd when he suffered a cut right front tire with 3 laps to go, and finished 28th.

Congrats to Truex on FINALLY getting a win, his since he won in 2006, 218 races ago. In that stretch he finished 2nd 6 times. My girlfriends favorite driver since she grew up in NJ and he's the only driver from NJ. He's from Mayetta, NJ, right near where her parents' had (or used to have before it got wiped out by Sandy) a small NJ shore house on Mystic Island.

Johnson spins out on a restart (from second place), ends up restarting 25th after that caution and finishes 9th....

Danica...well, she still can't race for shit

Since Daytona

16 races
Average qualification 34
Average finish 27th
Lead lap finishes 4

Yeah....if she was a dude with those numbers you wouldn't know his name.

Bad luck for Junior. Had a top five, if not win-worthy, car and had a tire tread roll in front of him while he was running 180 mph. Still got a near top ten finish.

Junior took the pole and was leading until he had the bad luck. I think he had the better car than Johnson. Johnson certainly had the best car after that.
