No good deed goes unpunished

Gotta get this off my chest. Back in February, we allowed a family of four to move into our downstairs (fully furnished with a kitchen) for thirty days to try and get back on their feet. Well, when their wife saw how nice the place was, she asked if we would mind if they stayed until June so their daughter could finish out the school year at the same school. We thought we would be nice and help out, as they were vouched for as being very nice.

Since then, they have:
*Broken a lamp, which then caused short circuits.
*The father tried to fix the outlet (before we realized it was the lamp) and messed all the wiring up which required me calling in my one time favor with the neighborhood electrician.
*The son cut his hair in the bathroom sink and then proceeded to sweep the hair down the drain, which caused the drain to become plugged - then they broke the tailpiece trying to unclog the drain.
*Proceed to run the washing machine around 10-15 times per week, even though we have asked them to limit laundry due to us being on a septic system.
*Then, try to sneak a load in when we are using the washer the one day (Sunday).
*Forced me to replace the lag bolts in the gate because they can't seem to ever close it, and it swings in the wind if you don't.
*Leave all the lights on when they leave.
*Scratched up the glass surface of the dinner table we had downstairs with a watch band by using the table for their laptop surfing.
*Repeatedly left our emergency key in the wrong place, so you couldn't find it if you were looking in the dark -then just left it laying on the ground in broad daylight.
*Frequently leave the house unlocked at night.
*Lastly, it was not disclosed to us when they were moving in, that they had two cats.

What lesson am I to learn from this? I'm trying to be a bigger man and not get bothered by all this, but it has been really tough.

Bad deal SG for sure. It is stuff like this that makes a person not want to help people and ruins others on doing just that. It is hard to make the distinction between those that need help and those looking for a hand out sometimes. (Contrary to what some believe, there is a difference!) I am happy to help those in need but you can't help people that won't try to help themselves. Your a good man for taking them in SG and you shouldn't be treated that way. If they were my kids I would kick them out, let alone people that were unrelated. If I was around Seattle, I'd come help you fix the shit they broke.

You did a good deed that Jesus, if he exists, would be proud of you. That you encountered struggle and loss during their tenure only accentuates the caliber of your character and level of kindness. Jesus, if he exists, would have done the same.

Yes, they are gone. But now we find out all the little things they damaged and didn't tell us about. Not only that, but they took all the batteries from all the remotes? Not to mention the superglue that was on the remotes. Makes me wonder what I am going to find that was superglued together.
