And dback, that might be the dumbest question you have ever asked.

Not at all. Did they steal them? Did they get them at an unregulated gun show? If background checks were required on all sales and all sales were regulated, would they have been still have been able to build such an arsenal so easily?

Very legitimate question.

Far more pertinant than the "let's ban pressure cookers" and other BS spouted on here
Yeah, because i see criminals lined up for background checks all the time.

Well, it looks like The Mouth has punked out on my proposed wager...

To review, he claimed in this thread that he and 0bama are going to take our guns...

I proposed a wager, with a neutral party holding the funds...

Douche Bag Boy and I would put in $1000 each...if I still have my guns when 0bama departs office, I get the money...if my guns are taken by douche and 0bama, he gets the money...

So, he spues , then backs out with excuses like a ringer as a neutral party, then a claim that he can't afford the wager...

I HEARBY DECLARE D1B IN DEFAULT AND MYSELF AS THE WINNER...

Besides, we all know the federal government can't keep track of people...what makes anyone think they can find weapons???

Skjellyfetti wrote:Question for the folks that argue that gun regulations have no effect on criminals purchasing or carrying guns:

Why aren't they out there buying fully automatic AK 47's, Uzi's, MP5's, etc.?

They are regulated much more stringently... and are therefore much more difficult to obtain. They're still possible to get illegally and no regulation will totally eliminate them... but, you have to have much, much better connections on the black market to purchase these types of weapons... connections common criminals and wanna-be terrorists do not have.

Police were outgunned by the "tommy gun" and other weapons in the 1920's... until they banned them in 1934. This took greatly decreased the amount of fully automatic weapons on the streets. It didn't eliminate them. But, that's not the point. It greatly reduced them.

If gun regulations have 0 effect, why aren't criminals trying to commit mass murder getting fully automatic rifles or submachine guns? Seems if I were planning to shoot up a crowded movie theater, school, etc. and kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible... I would opt for a fully automatic over a semiautomatic.
Um, price? :dunce:

On your last point, if you are trained in marksmanship, you don't want full-auto. It's a waste of ammunition. Full-auto is used for suppression, not killing per se.

So, the criminals stopped using fully automatic weapons like the "tommy gun" in large numbers in the '30's because of price? And the National Firearms Act had no effect?

Also, do y'all think that fully automatic weapons should be regulated at all?

Not really. The murder rate per capita in the US was higher in the late 1970s and early 1980s than in the late 1920s and early 1930s when automatic weapons were legal. Hmmm.

Certainly, criminal activity went down around the time of the 1934 NFA, but that was almost certainly due more to the Repeal of Prohibition in Dec 1933 than passage of the NFA six months later.

If gun control had a positive effect on crime, then you would expect the opposite to be true as well (ie. an easing of gun control would cause gun crime to rise). However, the homicide rate actually went down after the AWB was allowed to sunset in 2004 from about 5.7 to 4.7 homicides per 100K people from 2003 to present.

What do you think would have a bigger effect on violent crime today?

Ending the war on drugs, or an assault weapons ban?
