Yesterday I actually heard a radio talk show host say that the NRA used the Sandy Hook incident for political purposes. I kind of wanted to call in and ask him why he thinks that since it was pretty obvious that it was the "other side" of the gun control debate that tried to use it for that. But I know with that station you're on hold a long time and sometimes they'll take your call and let you hold 20 minutes or so then hang up on you.

Who determines who is a criminal? What defines a criminal? Somebody who does something illegal right? So if I get a speeding ticket should my guns be taken away?

Confiscation means that the government can swoop in and take property from you that you bought and paid for. And with a "national gun registry", they would have their order form right there.
