Cancun sounds lovely this time of year

CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) - Six people were found strangled to death and one decapitated in the southern Mexican tourist resort of Cancun on Sunday, the state's deputy attorney general said, in the latest mass killing to strike the city in the last few weeks.

Police found the bodies of the five men and two women in a shack in the outskirts of Cancun, a major tourist destination on Mexico's Caribbean coast, that has largely escaped the drug-related violence that has racked Acapulco, a faded tourist destination on the Pacific coast.

That can't be right. analjelly INSISTS that the drug violence in Mexico is limited to a few select corners of the country and the tourist areas are safe.

As usual, he's right. They're safer in Mexico than most tourist destinations in America.

11 most dangerous cities:

1. St. Louis 530
2. Atlanta 484
3. Birmingham Alabama (tie) 380
3. Orlando (tie) 380 *Disneyworld
5. Detroit 369
6. Memphis 361
7. Miami 346
8. Baltimore 339
9. Kansas City, Missouri 337
10. Minneapolis (tie) 331
10. Cleveland (tie) 331

Regarding Anaheim:
ANAHEIM – Facing an increase in violent crime while other large cities are marking a dropping crime rate, Anaheim police officials are beefing up gang-enforcement efforts while trying new ways to keep at-risk youths away from gang life.

The city's violent crime rate, which had trended downward since the early '90s, unexpectedly increased by 10 percent in 2011, FBI statistics show. And current department statistics for the first half of 2012 indicate that violent crimes in Anaheim such as homicides and aggravated assaults are on track to match last year's numbers.

Along with the overall increase in crime, authorities say, a larger percentage of the violent incidents are being perpetrated by gang members.

Recent FBI statistics show that most other large cities in Orange County, such as Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Garden Grove and Huntington Beach, have either reported drops in violent crime or remained at the same rate, as in Irvine.

The crime increase also comes as the Anaheim Police Department is under scrutiny for several recent officer-involved shootings, which have led family members of those who were killed to hold regular protests in front of police headquarters. City leaders have responded by agreeing to conduct independent reviews of recent "major police incidents," including the officer-involved shootings, by an outside investigator, a move Chief John Welter has said he welcomes for the sake of transparency.

Some good food in downtown Disney (Disney World). House of Blues with the menu by Aaron Sanchez, is great. Had some great entertainment on the schedule too.

This wasn't anywhere close to a tourist area.

The hotel zone in Cancun is about a 30 minute bus ride from the actual town of Cancun.

And these murders were in a shack in the outskirts of the city. Probably at least a 45 minute bus ride away. No gringo tourist wanders into whatever neighborhood this occurred in.

Quintana Roo's homicide rate is 2 per 100,000 citizens. That's low. Miami's is 20 per 100,000.

The US as a whole was 4.8 per 100,000 in 2010.

Of the 5,700,000 Americans who visited Mexico last year.... 120 were murdered. A rate of 2.1 per 100,000.... lower than the US's as a whole.
