Cops Overwhelming Opposition to Obama Gun Control

Post by Col Hogan »

The president like to surround himself with police chiefs when he speaks for his "gun control" measures...it's a picture that leaves the viewer with the impression that, "Gee, these law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line in the battle against gun violence really support this idea"...

And while that is exactly the impression the Administration wants you to have, it is totally false!!!

PoliceOne.com did the most extensive survey to date....15,000 police officers of every rank, and the results are clear...police officers OPPOSE the liberal anti-Second Amendment measures currently being debated...

"The survey, which was conducted in early March 2013, received 15,000 responses from law enforcement professionals. It found that the overall attitude of law enforcement is strongly anti-gun legislation and pro-gun rights, with the belief that an armed citizenry is effective in stopping crime. Response percentages varied only slightly when analyzed by rank and department size. Among the results:

86 percent feel the currently proposed legislation would have no effect or a negative effect on improving officer safety

Similarly, 92 percent feel that banning semi-automatic firearms, or “assault weapons,” would have no effect or a negative effect on reducing violent crime

Demonstrating the opinion that the best way to combat gun crime is through harsher punishment, 91 percent said the use of a firearm while perpetrating a crime should lead to a stiff, mandatory sentence with no plea bargains. Likewise, 59 percent believe increasing punishment severity for unlicensed dealers would reduce crime

Respondents were more split on background checks, with 31 percent agreeing that mental health background checks in all gun sales would help reduce mass shootings, while 45 percent disagreed

71 percent support law enforcement leaders who have publicly refused to enforce more restrictive gun laws within their jurisdictions

82 percent believe gun buyback or turn-in programs are ineffective in reducing the level of gun violence

91 percent support the concealed carry of firearms by civilians who have not been convicted of a felony and/or have not been deemed psychologically incapable

Likewise, 80 percent feel that legally-armed citizens would likely have reduced the number of casualties in recent mass shooting incidents

38 percent believe the biggest cause of gun violence in the United States is the “decline in parenting and family values”. This was trailed by “overly lax parole and short sentencing standards” at 15 percent and “pop culture influence” (eg. violent movies and video games) at 14 percent

Cops, like defense contractors and other government workers, don't give a fuck about public safety. The more crime, the more job security.

Cops are largely pro-gun rights because they are the ones who have to deal with crime victims every day.

The FOP is always happy to trot out chiefs of police for democrat politicians because it is their meal ticket.

Denver police officer speaks out on plans to use Police Academy, cops as prop for gun control speech
DENVER - A Denver police officer is speaking out on Facebook about the use of the Denver Police Academy as a prop for a speech by President Barack Obama.

"Today, President Obama and Governor (John) Hickenlooper are going to use the Denver Police Academy as a prop to push a political agenda," Akins wrote on Facebook. "That hangar, the badge hanging on the wall, and the officers standing in the crowd will now be forever attached to the agenda of a political party and it’s push to strip Americans of their rights."

Newtown Mom Uses Obama’s Weekly Address To Push For Crackdown On Second Amendment Rights…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The mother of a 6-year-old boy killed in the Connecticut school shooting used the opportunity to fill in for President Barack Obama during the weekly radio and Internet address to make a personal plea from the White House for action to combat gun violence.

“Thousands of other families across the United States are also drowning in our grief,” said Francine Wheeler, choking back tears in the address broadcast Saturday. “Please help us do something before our tragedy becomes your tragedy.”

Ben Wheeler was among the 20 first-graders and six adults killed in the Dec. 14 attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Francine Wheeler was the first person to deliver the address other than Obama or Vice President Joe Biden since the two took office in 2009.

Say what you will about background checks...the government is all about the feel good story about how it will cure all of the bad things, but they want more background checks because they have noticed about how many guns are bought each year. And in those sales, they want their cut..so, charge 30 bucks for every gun sale for "background checks" and the government gets lots and lots of free money.

I think the opposition to background checks is that the Federal government will save the records as a de facto national registry is the issue. The counter argument would be, "what's wrong with destroying the record after the buyer has passed his background check?"

The states already keep records of gun ownership, but those records are traditionally closed to the federal government, as they should be.

Here in Missouri this has become a very big issue in recent weeks. The attorney general is suing the governor for allowing the records to be turned over to the federal government, against Missouri law. I expect this will soon become an issue in many states.

So what's to stop the Feds from obtaining those? I really don't see the big deal with this. So they want to ensure, through checks, that the wrong people aren't getting guns? Sounds logical to me.

we are already doing this. How come every time you buy a big ticket item, Best Buy they ask for your phone number and address. Its a data base. Look at what Health Insurance companies are doing. They are telling people to get a annual check up and fax personal Health information to them Such ass BMI, Blood Pressure, Blood sugar and weight. I told them I had my annual check up in Feb. and I will not send them anything. Why do they neeed this?? Its all about Big Brother tring to run our lives and we are letting them get away with this.

Absolutely right, Klean.

Senator Fritz Hollings used to say the there is no education in the second kick of a mule.

Perhaps people are saying enough is enough. I, along with many other pro-gun rights folks have no problems with background checks for gun purchases. It's a no brainer.

The problem is that the Federal government wants to keep a record of that background check, which will become a part of a national registry. The national government is not entitled to that information, but since those background checks will be run through NCIC, there is nothing to stop the government from doing this.

I can get on board with it being the business of government to prevent criminals and nuts from buying guns, but I am adamantly opposed to the government having me on a list of law abiding citizens exercising their Constitutional rights. If I pass the background check, then why would the government want to keep that record?

Absolutely right, Klean. You have just clearly and succinctly illustrated the slippery slope. Why shouldn't we do this, since government already does it in other venues?

Senator Fritz Hollings used to say the there is no education in the second kick of a mule.
