SC public hearings on open carry of firearms

Post by ASUG8 »

GREENVILLE — A public hearing on legislation that would allow South Carolina gun owners to openly carry their weapons in public triggered a heated debate Monday night.

Applause rippled through the audience of about 300 people in the Greenville County Council chambers after Boiling Springs attorney Robert Merting said, “We should allow the innocent to defend themselves without permission, without registration, without being treated like a common criminal,”

The crowd booed minutes later when Melinda Hoffman told members of a South Carolina Senate subcommittee conducting Monday night’s hearing that “offensive weapons don’t belong in public.”

Why wouldn't it be legal?

Some are saying that as it's currently written it would negate all CWP's in the state and therefore the reciprocity agreements SC has with other states on their CWP's. Here are the states where SC currently has these agreements:

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

With so much irrational gunphobia in this country I don't think I'd want to carry in public unless it's concealed.

No kidding. I carry a lot and no one is the wiser. I am sure you, me, anyone pass by many many people each day that are carrying.

I agree - I can see both sides on this one, but don't want to see our Main St. become the OK Corral. I don't think it will go through, but it demonstrates how freaked out everyone is that our rights are possibly being trampled upon.

A man with a violin asked a NYC cabby how to get to Carnage Hall, the driver replied "practice, practice, practice."

If'n I was to open carry, I'd wanna be more like Doc Holiday, and much less like Ike Clanton.

To be honest, my favorite off duty weapon was/is a featherlight Smith .38 snub. It is easier to just stick it in my britches pocket than to wear it in some goofy pancake holster on my belt.

He was going for his gun, officer, and there was murder in his eye, so I took him out. Where do I collect my reward money?

I went to a Conferece in Savannah, GA, last year and had the opportunity to see a guy I consider perhaps my most influential and helpful mentor. A very bright guy with a Ph.D. in estuarine ecology and a Masters in Statistics from the University of Georgia Marine Institute at Sapelo Island. Back when I worked with him he was also a martial arts teacher. Back then he used to kind of look down on people who "had" to carry guns. But when I saw him 20+ years later he was walking around Savannah with a pistol on his hip. Seriously. We're walking around downtown Savannah and he's wearing a holster with a pistol in it in plain view.

It was interesting to me since he was always someone who believed in being able to defend himself. Apparently he'd evolved from martial arts to firepower.

I never understood why folks get uneasy when around someone with a pistol in plain view

I was not uneasy but I was surprised because when I worked with him he felt that a gun was unecessary. What's interesting, though, is that he subscribed to a martial arts philosophy whereby if you had to use your training you killed the adversary. You tried to be peaceful and de-fuse the situation but if you had to go into martial arts action you were supposed to go for the kill.

So I guess it would probably not be a good idea to mess with him when he's got a gun.
