Re: Sequester 2013
It's not that there's this big need to feel sorry for Federal employees. It's that this whole thing is symbolic and Federal employees are not the issue. Not per se. According to an estimate printed in the article at http://www.downsizinggovernment.org/ove ... al-workers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; the total cost to the country of Federal civilian employee compensation in 2011 was $236 billion. That's a lot of money. But the 2011 budget deficit was $1.3 trillion. So if they could somehow have gotten all Federal employees to work for free the deficit would still have been over a trillion dolars. And obviously there has to be some Federal civilian workforce. We might not need 2.1 million Federal employees as the estimate at the linked article says we had in 2011. But even under a very libertarian form of government we'd still need pretty many.
The problem is the entitlement mentality. It's the unwillingness to cut things like Medicare, Medicaid, and (yes) Social Security. Saying that Social Security isn't part of the problem is ridiculous. It's like if I make a family budget and say everything my wife makes is going to go to the entertainment budget so that there's a separate funding source while my salary pays for everything else. So I budget $1000 per month for entertainment. My wife brings home $1,100 per month so I say there's a surplus for the "entertainment program! Meanwhile I can't make ends meet on everything else. I'm running a $1,000 per month monthly deficit. But I say spending $1,000 per month on entertainment isn't part of the problem because, why, my wife's salary is paying for that. It's all really the same pot. And I'm spending $1,000 per month on entertainment out of that pot. The "entertainment program" uses resources.

So anyway, it goes without saying now, Bill K if you read this, I will not be renewing my UD season tickets this year because I cannot afford them.

Hey, look at the bright side...you'll probably be in a lower tax bracket!93henfan wrote:Thank God I'm a penny-pinching saver [feel free to insert your own substitute adjective] type who's socked away a nice savings.
I crunched the sequester impact to my paycheck. Right now, after child support (26.6%), the cheap room I rent in VA with utilities incl (13.4%), food at $20/day (10.7%), car (9.2%), loss on upside down pre-divorce home that I rent out at loss (6.0%), fuel to see my sons (4.4%), life insurance (1.9%), and car insurance (1%)...
...I had 26.8% left to do things with my sons, save, invest, support American business, etc.
Sequester will take away 22.0% of my takehome, so I will now have 4.8%.
So there's my personal sequester impact. My takehome after bills is reduced from 26.8% of takehome to 4.8% of takehome. So, essentially, I'm taking an 82.1% cut to my spending money.
Thanks in advance for your sympathy.

What you mention are lapses in continuing resolutions which haven't occurred since the Clinton administration. They lasted less than a week and were shutdowns rather furloughs. You are correct there was no effective loss in pay after it was all said and done.
I forgive your ignorance of how federal employees are handled. It is indicative of the ignorance of the nation as a whole. We continue to get lumped in with everyone's hate of Congress. They get Cadillac benefits. We do not. We lose pay. They do not. We have a clue. They don't.

That is correct concerning the difference between lapses in the CR and furloughs due to the sequester.93henfan wrote:We've been under a pay freeze for three years and now sequester. We won't be getting any of it back.Cluck U wrote:

For me, I have the added benefit that my wife is unable to work. Most foreign service officers are single income families, because we live and work in countries where in many cases there is no bilateral agreement on spousal employment. The ironic thing here is that we are taking a pay cut just by serving. My wife could pull down 6 figures tomorrow back in the US with her experience and Bucknell degree (she was before she married this public servant).
I don't mind this at all, don't get me wrong. We are more than happy doing what we are doing, but on one salary we cannot save much of a nest egg, and if I get furloughed I have about 3 months to live on before I need to seriously consider resigning and getting out of public service.

That example is from the government shutdown during the Clinton Administration...the shutdown lasted a few days, and then Congress passed legislation giving civilians back pay...Cluck U wrote:IIRC, the federal employees not only got their raises, but they also got all of their back pay after the last pay delay?HI54UNI wrote:

Different times, different situation...
IMHO, if furloughs happen, and DOD furloughs won't kick in till the third week in April, we won't get that money back...
As 93 points out, I'm a double-dipper...federal employee and military retiree...military pay is not impacted by sequester, so while I will lose well over $1k a month once it kicks in, I'm not in as bad a spot as 93...
Maybe we'll have him over for dinner a few nights to help his food budget...

Do you have any landscaping projects coming up? Bandl has left the area and I will have a free day per week from April through September. I will work for Spam. If you have any extra cans, with the receipts of course, I will gladly take them.
Frankly, I am appalled at the lack of support from the non-federal employees on this board. It's sickening.

Obama's Golf Weekend With Tiger Cost As Much As 341 Federal Workers FurloughedJohnStOnge wrote:I want to see how Obama is going to adjust his recreational activity patterns. Will he stop going out and playing golf at the cost of several million dollars per trip? Vacations?
I thought about that the other day when I heard a pundit talk about how much it costs for the President to go out for recreation like golf. Not a proportionately in the grand scheme of things. But when you're telling some Federal employees that make maybe $100,000 per year that they're going to get a $20,000 annual cut you're saying every little bit is important. So are you going to go out and cost the taxpayers millions of dollars to play golf when some people are having their salaries cut by 20% and some other people are maybe even losing their jobs? Or can you manage to give up recreational activities that are going to require using Air Force One, Secret Service details, and other support while this is going on?

We're currently have a debt to GDP ratio of about 107%. It just topped 100% Aug 2011. The national debt is pushing 16.7 trillion, GDP is about 15.6 trillion. The last time we were over 100% was 1948, and 40s were the only other time we've ever been over 100%. Huge difference between now and then.kalm wrote:Yes, he's a politician, and DSU's questions are valid. We've been deeply in debt before, the rest of the world and our lenders do need us to stay afloat, and government financing is not the same as household financing.

Re: Sequester 2013
I went back and looked at my W2 just to fact check myself. I actually paid $27,500 to the Feds (taxes, FICA, medifraud) and $6,000 to Delaware, so my tax bill was $33,500. Sorry for the earlier underreport.93henfan wrote:Yes, because we don't have to pay federal taxes too.SDHornet wrote:Best of luck to the fed employees on the board. I guess I'll be reimbursed for the $25k or so on my W2 that went to federal taxes, FICA, SS, etc since I apparently suddenly became exempt.

If pay goes down, does child support go down?Cluck U wrote:Hey, look at the bright side...you'll probably be in a lower tax bracket!93henfan wrote:Thank God I'm a penny-pinching saver [feel free to insert your own substitute adjective] type who's socked away a nice savings.
