I agree with Biden
On the shotgun thing. I do believe that a shotgun is the best home defense weapon for most people. A shotgun loaded with buckshot. I think it does increase the chances that the typical person will hit the intruder. Another thing is that the buckshot will not penetrate walls as well as a rifle bullet would so you don't have to worry as much about accidentally harming someone you don't intend to harm.
Many years ago I opted for using a shotgun as a home defense weapon. That scenario is always going to involve relatively short range and little time to aim. Yes you give something else because in most states you can only have a maximum of three shots loaded if you're also going to use it for hunting. But you could get one strictly for home defense, remove the plug, and have five shots. And I guess you can say you might be able to get a handgun out quicker. But not that much. All in all, I think an very good argument can be made for a shotgun loaded with buckshot being the best home invasion defense weapon.
In fact it's interesting that within the past few months I remember hearing a radio report on a Baton Rouge area police official saying that. I mean saying that to him a shotgun is the best home invasion defense weapon. Of course I wouldn't say, as Biden did, to walk out and shoot a couple of shots just to scare somebody. To me you don't shoot it unless you're shooting to kill. No sense warning. No sense letting the intruder know what you have until he's getting ripped apart by buckshot.

I was OK with what his said right up to the point of taking a double barrel shotgun, load two shells, go on the porch and shoot both rounds. WTF?

Biden is probably the smartest Dem, a good shot and a great Catholic
In a campaign video released this week, Vice President Joe Biden claims that President Obama shares his belief in the social teachings of the Catholic Church.
“As a practicing Catholic, like many of you,” Biden says, “I was raised in a household where there was no distinction between the values my mom and dad drilled into us and what I learned from the nuns and priests who educated me. We call it Catholic social doctrine.”
“I’m here to tell you that President Obama shares those values,” Biden states.

No. 8 birdshot is what to use, lethal at home defense range and less penetrating of walls than buckshot.JohnStOnge wrote:On the shotgun thing. Again, I don't know crap about guns but I am still finding it hard to believe that a long gun is a better weapon in the home than a hand gun. I think the close quarters limits your ability to freely find your target. Yeah, I get the idea of the spray pattern of the shot versus a single bullet but I still think a long gun is a tactical disadvantage. Not to mention the number of shots before reloading.
Re: I agree with Biden
Just before I bought my first handgun, I asked a guy at the gun shop which handgun was the best for home defense. His response: "I have pistols hidden all over my house, and I carry one at nearly all times even in the house just long enough to get me to my shotgun."CAA Flagship wrote:Again, I don't know crap about guns but I am still finding it hard to believe that a long gun is a better weapon in the home than a hand gun. I could see arguments both ways, but if you went the shotgun route I'd go for a <20" barrel.

That's a smart choice, guns hidden all over the place. Hidden doesn't necessarily mean accessible to kids, etc. I know several people like that - I have two only because I didn't want someone busting through my front door and me having to run to the back bedroom to defend myself. Plus we have no kids in the house.Ibanez wrote:That's a smart choice, guns hidden all over the place. There is no way that won't turn out badly.ASUG8 wrote:

I have a loaded pistol on each floor, but the shotgun in the bedroom is the best stopper. It has an 18" barrel for HD and 5 rounds of #1 buck ready to go.

Re: I agree with Biden
There is no spray pattern at the close range we're talking about and five rounds should be plenty for anybody. Maybe if you're in a closet you'd want a pistol. I think you'd do more damage too with a shotgun if you didn't hit a lethal area.CAA Flagship wrote:Again, I don't know crap about guns but I am still finding it hard to believe that a long gun is a better weapon in the home than a hand gun. For killing power I'd want buckshot too, but I'd be worried about through the wall penetration. If you shoot somebody in your house it will be within 15 feet and birdshot will do the trick nicely, I'll wager.LeadBolt wrote:I would rather use #1 buck. I would rather use something designed to kill mammals rather than something designed to kill quail. You might be right in your wager, but then again I don't want to take that chance.

At 15' you're going to catch the full load and it weighs the same as the buckshot. I don't want to kill somebody on the other side of the wall and I think there is less chance of that with smaller shot.LeadBolt wrote:houndawg wrote:

I understand your concern with over penetration. I would be just as heart broken shooting someone I am trying to protect as not taking down who I am protecting them from. That is why I don't use: 1). Magnum shells; 2). 3" or 3.5" shells, but rather 2.75" shells; 3). Slugs, 000, 00, or 0 size buck shot; 4). Steel shot; 5). a barrel longer than the legal minimum. All of these reduce penetration.houndawg wrote:At 15' you're going to catch the full load and it weighs the same as the buckshot. Since my house is 70' long, I'm not sure I will be shooting someone within 15'. The research I have done indicates that birdshot, especially #8 is not particularly effective. I have put most faith in the testing done by the FBI labs. What sources have you read that differ?
I assume that if they break into my house while I am home they are probably high and require more stopping power, and that I will be shooting in less than optimum conditions. I also would not hesitate to shoot them while they were outside trying to break in.
I also would never pull out a gun with the intention of anything less than killing someone. It is just too plain dangerous to pull a gun and not do so.

Folks, any sized shot from a 12 gauge fired from inside a home to a target also inside the home will be sufficient, holy shit. Do some test shooting with #8 bird shot at say, 20 feet
Would not make much difference if it were #6, #4, single buck, double buck, triple buck, or slug, nobody is going to be able to get off the floor with a blast that close..
