Lindsey Graham called Hagel a "radical" on one of the talk shows yesterday.

Cool. So, Obama used Hagel as a ploy to make Republicans look stupid (not that they needed any help). Any comment on my actual post, or just more ranting about Obama?Baldy wrote:It was well played by Obama. It wasn't a ploy. Like many of Obama's nominees, Hagel was a horrible choice from the start. It was a win/win for him. Looking at it through the media's eyes....If Hagel is confirmed, Obama got his puppet. If Hagel isn't confirmed, it was the Republicans fault because they ate one of their own. Again, it was well played on his part.

Sure. You explained that it was stupid for him to nominate Hagel, yet you also explained that it was genius ("win/win") because either way the Republicans come out looking bad. Hagel at the start of the surge called it, “the greatest foreign policy blunder since the Vietnam War.” He was proven wrong- the 07' surge was a success. When now asked he won't admit he was wrong. He's not an idiot, but he's in denial, and he doesn't have the acumen to be Sec Def.kalm wrote:Oh my goodness...the conk hand wringing over this one.Ivytalk wrote:Chuck Hagel is a joke. While I don't think Hagel is particularly bright, and he comes across often as dimwitted (you'd think McCain and him would buddies in duncery then, but for some reason not), I also think the Senate is getting in the way of a legitimate Executive Branch privilege. I'm all for the President having who they want as Cabinet members, as long as they aren't criminals or something so bad they shouldn't be in the job. The Senate should have their chance to throw stones if they want, but at the end of the day it's the President's Cabinet and these are the people he wants. The longer they delay the inevitable (and Hagel will get the job pending some ethical bombshell) they more they look out of touch. Again just a silly thing to get hung up on.

They do and they don't, though, IMO. Political parties do get defined, in part, by their opponents. And Obama has been an amazingly effective politician in being able to dictate how the other party gets portrayed. He's absolutely obliterated the GOP recently and he's in the White House because of it. However, it's almost like a scorched earth kind of win (not a great metaphor, I know) because now that he's won, he's still left to deal with the GOP that he's helped to form. Granted, he's not the only one and the GOP deserves a fair amount of blame as well, but at the end of the day, we have a dysfunctional GOP that can't be worked with because that's what Obama backed them into being in the way that he's won Presidential elections. But he hasn't won the Congressional elections and that has left him an opposition party in one of the Houses that he just can't deal with. When you pillory and smear the other party so badly, and then only win part of the government, then you have a problem, and that's what we have today. The GOP that won the House is not a GOP that is ever going to bargain well with the President. And seeing how hard it is to win back control of the House (gerrymandering from both sides), I'm not sure Obama's going to get a different House to work with. And that makes the next 4 years pretty dismal in terms of what can be accomplished, namely, very little.houndawg wrote:GannonFan wrote:While I don't think Hagel is particularly bright, and he comes across often as dimwitted (you'd think McCain and him would buddies in duncery then, but for some reason not), I also think the Senate is getting in the way of a legitimate Executive Branch privilege. Secretary of defense nominee Chuck Hagel said Israel is on its way to becoming an apartheid state during an April 9, 2010, appearance at Rutgers University, according to a contemporaneous account by an attendee.
Hagel also accused Israel of violating U.N. resolutions, called for U.S.-designated terrorist organization Hamas to be included in any peace negotiations, and described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “radical,” according to the source.

So politics only started when Newt Gingrich came into office? Come on, this isn't anything different that's been happening for 200 years in this country, it's the same kind of politics that has always existed.houndawg wrote:The scorched earth tactics come straight out of Newt Gingrich and the neocons playbook GF, you know that. And how are Dems really making out well in this then? The Dems have the White House and they can and continue to make/let the GOP look like fools, yet they are still weighed down by a dreadful economy that is more their's everyday and they have put in place an obstinate House chamber controlled by the party they've helped to cariacuture and they can't do anything substantial without them. It's like teasing an ugly girl all through high school and calling her names and mocking her and then find out at graduation that you have to marry her. Sure, you get the diploma, but now you're sharing a bed with someone with an axe to grind. If this is winning then we need to bring Charlie Sheen back into the picture to talk about winning.

Wrong. Nice dodge though.
The Republicans are getting beat at their own game and they don't like it. If you didn't notice the escalation in the ideological rhetoric when the so-called neocons came into office then you weren't paying attention. The Republicans can thank the likes of Karl Rove and Grover Norquist and Newt Gingrich for turning their party into a national, no, worldwide, laughingstock.

Of course you think the rhetoric escalated when Newt Gingrich came aboard - you're a hardcore Dem partisan, what else would you think? To you the GOP is always at fault. That's a fine position to have, and you're free to have it. But politics has been politics for centuries - I think you're giving Karl Rove too much credit if you think he invented political mud slinging.houndawg wrote:GannonFan wrote:
So politics only started when Newt Gingrich came into office? Come on, this isn't anything different that's been happening for 200 years in this country, it's the same kind of politics that has always existed.

And like I said, what does it matter if the GOP is being beat at their own game or not? At the end of the day, Obama is stuck with a moribound economy and now an intransigent GOP controlled House that will likely stay that way throughout his last term. What has been won? To have the White House and no power to do anything truly substantial with it is nice but not what it could be. Politics might be the winner but for most of us who aren't partisans (although that's gotten less and less over time) there's not a lot of winning out here.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. Al Swearengen

So you're blaming Obama's meanness for the make up of the GOP?

You act like the republicans just became intransigent, that simply isn't true. And if you think the Republican's tactics didn't change with the coming of the neocons then you haven't been in touch for a while.
Nor am I a hard core democrat partisan, in fact, I would most always rather have the opposing party controlling one of the houses of Congress. I'm more of a populist and think Bernie Sanders is da man.
And I didn't venture an opinion as to whether it matters if the conks are getting beat at their own game; I'm just saying they are, that's all. Not that it isn't funny to watch them squeal, I mean these are the clowns that wanted to impeach a sitting Prez for getting some on the side, never mind that they were out soliciting in public restrooms themselves and screwing around on their dying wives.
