Maybe I could have worded my post more clearly, but the gist of it is true. Some schools choose to cut men's programs (rather than add women's programs) in order to come into compliance.GannonFan wrote:Huh? You have to have a bigger window than just right now. Compare the number of women's sports, and the women competing in them, with the number of sports and participants just before Title IX was passed. It's not even a question that the the amount of sports and opportunities exploded with the passage of Title IX. It's only been in the past decade or two that money strapped schools have started to meet the ratio requirement by cutting men's sports. And considering that football loses money at all but maybe 50 colleges in America you still have a find a way to answer that question of how come so many schollies are tied up in a men's sport that doesn't often cover its own costs and seems to be on a path to increase expenses year after year that we don't blame football for causing the cessation of other men's sports like wrestling.BlueHen86 wrote: Adding women's sports was the desired result, but it isn't what happened.

The gist is true. The intent of Title IX was to increase opportunities for women and it did achieve that goal. The unintended consequence was that schools cut men's sports while adding women's sports to get to equilibrium rather than simply adding more women's sports.BlueHen86 wrote:Maybe I could have worded my post more clearly, but the gist of it is true. You can go to Flo Wrestling's website to sign the petition supporting the effort to keep wrestling an Olympic sport. In addition, there is a petition at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/user that seeks to have the Administration take steps to pressure the IOC. The rare occurence where the USA, Russia and Iran all can agree!
The Olympic hymn speaks of "running, WRESTLING and throwing". It mentions no other athletic activity. This is downright atrocious, but enough vocal objection can change minds.

In Cedar Falls there is a weekly radio show based on, maybe related too, themat.com as they reference it on the show all the time. The show is called On the Mat.
It's hosted by Jason Bryant of Amateur Wrestling News and Kyle Klingman of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum talk all things wrestling....high school, college, olympic, jrs, you name it they talk it.
This past week they was tough to listen too...they were litterally at a loss for words other than things like "The IOC made a huge mistake, and something needs to be done". It was sad to listen too. These guys have opinions of a ton of things, and there's almost never silence, but it was half silent this week.
Here's a link to their podcasts/webcasts for those wrestling heads that love to hear/talk wreslting.

The Iowa gov has started an online petition to keep wrestling. He's having a press conference with former Iowa wresting coach and Olympic wrestling gold medalist Dan Gable, Olympic bronze medal winner and University of Iowa associate head wrestling coach Terry Brands, and University of Northern Iowa wrestling coach Doug Schwab, who represented the U.S. in the 2008 Olympics.

Great Pro-wrestling editorial in today's Wall Street Journal called "Badminton Boys." Olympic Committee allegedly will meet next week to reconsider. It's all money-driven.
