Re: 2013 FCS Signings
Our coaches were fired up to get both. Williams had a bunch of FBS interest in the fall but is a redshirt sophomore and doesn't graduate until May ... we wouldn't have a shot otherwise. Smith is a ballhawk who makes plays.dal4018 wrote:Mike Smith is a nice find for the Lions as a DB excellent size 6-3 205!!! Another nice pick up DJ Williams 6-5 320 from my backyard NJ!!
Our staff loves Keeland McElrath, Darrius Guy and Isiah Corbett as well ... all have three years eligibility remaining. they signed both Guy and Corbett at Delta State when they were there, along with DL A.J. Bowen, who also has three years left.
Of course getting Bryan Bennett from Oregon was huge ... helluva class overall, assuming we can get them all on campus and on the playing field.

Re: 2013 FCS Signings
Like I said earlier, the issue with Williams is he's a 2 for 2, May graduate, and most FBS programs aren't going to take a chance on a QB or OL in that situation. The ideal situation is to have a redshirt year available and have them on campus for spring practice. He fits neither category, though for us, it's a no brainer because talent-wise, he's a difference-maker at the FCS level, plus we have 4 of 5 starters returning and signed several OL at midterm ... if something happens and he doesn't make it, we're ok depth-wise ... but if all goes as planned and he's good to go in the fall, you're talking a major upgrade potentially.dal4018 wrote:Shocked that Rutgers didn't come calling on this D1 talent right under their very nose if Penn St excuse me Pedophile St asked for his services Rutgers would have paid him a visit.slulionsfan wrote:

As for Smith, I don't know his back story as much other than he kinda flew under radar ... I'm sure there's a reason why FBS schools passed, but again, if you're us, you take a chance on the upgrade in talent.
Ron Roberts has a history of mining overlooked nuggets out of JCs, especially May graduates who tend to get left behind by FBS schools ... he did it at D-II Delta State and is doing it again here ... we'll be a much different team in the fall than we were in 2012.

For whatever the reason, he was available and we got him ... also signed his teammate, Duane Abney, who's a pretty talented left tackle, similar to Williams but not as big. I'm sure packaging them together didn't hurt.dal4018 wrote:Okay thanks again if PAC-12 schools knew about Smith no way in hell would your guys have gotten a shot at him with his size 6-3 205.slulionsfan wrote:
