Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat is Awesome

Post by 93henfan »

 :notworthy:
AP - MIAMI — A Miami woman has been jailed on contempt charges after flipping off a judge during a drug possession hearing.

Miami television station NBC 6 reported that 18-year-old Penelope Soto laughed Monday when Circuit Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat asked how much her jewelry was worth as he inquired about her financial assets.

The judge told Soto to be serious and Soto said she was being serious.

He set Soto's bond at $5,000 and said bye-bye.

Soto laughed again and replied, "adios." He summoned her back and reset her bond at $10,000.

Soto asked whether the judge was serious and he said, "I am serious. Adios."

Soto flipped him off and blurted an expletive as she walked away.

The judge summoned her again and sentenced her to 30 days in jail.
Stupid cunt.

Although I agree that it's important to be respectful in court, I honestly think he was partly instigating it. He was acting very light-hearted from the start and she was following his tone. Then when he gives her a light-hearted "bye-bye" and she follows with an informal "adios," suddenly he turns serious and the situation becomes unacceptable? Granted the flip-off after he called her back was a dumb response, but I'd be pissed off too if he upped the bail like that. And IMO, giving her 30 days in jail at the end was just an abuse of power. I think this is a case where a girl with a big ego meets a judge with a bigger ego. But just 'cause a judge doesn't like someone's attitude, does that mean they can borderline abuse their powers? Slippery slope...

edit: and all this for what, freakin' Xanax?!

You flip off a judge while in court and throw an expletive at him as well and you deserve the jail time you get (well, within reason - 30 days seems fine, could've gone less). You just don't talk back to authority in a formal setting. I blame the parents.

That is great.

Fuck that whore.

Most people who end up being arraigned even for the most minor offenses are scared shitless to walk into court in prison orange. This bitch thought she was hot shit and had zero respect for authority.

Fuck her and the horse she rode in on.

It was a jackass move to up her bail the way he did.

Unprofessional on his part, but no excuse to give him the bird and throw an F-bomb in court.

Meh...its only 30 days.

Cooler heads prevailed and she apologized. Judge then canceled the 30 day sentence.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I've been on the giving end of a few of these exchanges with my boys. 'Oh...you're gonna whine about being grounded? How about 2 days then? Three? Anyone got three? Yes! I've got three right over here...'

Having family in law enforcement myself CID, I'm sure you'll agree that the same rules apply to dealing with cops. I've heard of and seen people literally talk themselves into arrests and jail. The judge can be a dick for what he did, or you can be completely innocent in an interaction with the police, but when someone holds the hammer, show respect, or suffer the consequences.

Well, not too much. I do not like the whole "contempt of court" concept as it is. I don't like the fact that a public official can unilaterally throw somebody in jail with no trial, no due process, no anything because that public official just says so. And it' goes beyond stuff like this. Judges can throw you in jail because they don't like what you wear to court. In my opinion we allow judges way too much power in this society.

We dress these people in ceremonial black robes and treat them as though they are some kind of royalty. The whole thing is ridiculous. They shouldn't be dressed in ceremonial robes and they shouldn't be able to throw people in jail just because they don't like what they say. It's like we have all these ideals about government by the People, no royalty, etc., then we allow one little group to act as though they're royalty.

You just don't talk back to authority in a formal setting.
In all seriousness I'm asking you to think about that. Do you really think someone in what is supposed to be a free society should be thrown in jail for talking back to an authority figure in a formal setting? No trial. No due process. Just the authority figure doesn't like them talking back to them so they throw them in jail for 30 days.

It's just amazing to me that people agree with that being the situation. I know they do. But it just amazes me.

You are correct in a practical sense. If you're smart you're going to show respect.

But, to me, there is still a problem with the fact that such is the case. In a free society, it shouldn't be like that. There should be strict controls in place to be sure that judges, cops, etc., are held accountable for treating people differently because they don't like what they say, the way they act, ect.

CNN had an update on her today. Apparently she's passed all her drug tests to date and got a big round of applause by the court when the judge was told she was one of the best behaved in the program.

Sounds like a good person who had a shitty day in the original video. Everyone has their bad moments, but it sucks that the internet can often make those bad moments define you to others.

Kind of agree, but it may be necessary.

There's a dumb and violent underclass that wouldn't think twice about tearing this nation apart and that cunt is one of em.

Hopefully someone kills her in jail.
