WHA? All the old timers used to use the term. They didnt like people thinking they were part Irish. My granny would get sh1tting over it.

Another good book is "Born Fighting: The Scots Irish in America". It's by Senator James Webb. I actually had the privilege of going with him out to an old ARVN cemetery in Vietnam; got to talk about the book a little bit. He's western VA Scots Irish to the hilt. Our families have a couple common surnames.

North Carolina is awash in Scots, because it was near the terminus of the first SI migration in the mountains, and also Highlanders settled (founded Fayetteville and all the other Sandhills counties) in the eastern part of the state after the Clearances.

BTW the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is huge. Before I left the country I participated there for several years; I was the drum major of the Charleston Police Pipes and Drums.

I have read that the Farqhuarsons name change had to do with retaining family lands when the Comyns fell from power.

The son of the 1st John Comyn was John II Comyn, "the Black Comyn", his son, John III Comyn was "the Red Comyn", a decendant of King Donald III and King David I. He was the one who led the Scots at the Battle of Roslin and was ultimately murdered in church by the treachery of Robert Bruce.

Why are so many of the pipe and drum outfits associated with Police and fire depts.?

Just tradition. Most large police and fire depts prior to about 1890 were all Irish and Scots. I guess the Micks and the Jocks are drawn to law enforcement; public service. The FBI used to be about 100% Irish. Anyhow, they brought the pipes with them.
