Let us pause today to honor the sacrifice of four Army Chaplains who died together during WWII on Feb 3, 1943. They were accompanying Soldiers to the European front when their ship USAT DORCHESTER was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. The ship sank in about half an hour. Their Coast Guard escorts were able to pick up about 231 survivors, but over 700 more were lost in the frigid waters off Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, there were not enough life jackets to go around, so the four chaplains gave theirs to four other Soldiers. The chaplains went down with the ship with arms linked, praying and singing hymns. Ever since, the Congress has set aside Feb 3 in their honor.
