Perhaps some of the strictest gun control is in Chicago and that has worked so well.

According to the Tribune, McCarthy said within the first three weeks of the month, "two of Chicago's 22 police districts seized more illegal guns than were collected in all of New York City."
McCarthy also pointed out New York also has harsher penalties for gun violations.
"... When people get caught with (illegal) guns in New York, they go to jail," McCarthy said, according to the Tribune. "… As a result they're not carrying guns with impunity."

Let's ban Chicago.

Chicago is a great city, it's just the people that inhabit it......Cluck U wrote:grizzaholic wrote:Chicago (CNN) -- A teen who performed at events around President Barack Obama's inauguration was shot to death in Chicago this week, and now her story has become part of the debate in Washington over gun violence nationwide.

I really, really hate seeing that mentality. That "if even ONE life can be saved" thing. The reason is that there's an awful lot of stuff we could do that would "save" lives...in other words reduce mortality from some particular cause. Like for instance we could say we're going to put a $10 per gallon tax on gasoline. That would reduce mortality from traffic accidents. Absolutely no doubt about it because it would dramatically reduce the number of miles driven. I'd say the number of lives "saved" in terms of motor vehicle accident mortality would be in the 4 or 5 digits annually. But the fact that it would "save lives" doesn't mean we should do it."but if we can save even one child's life,

http://www.nber.org/digest/jan03/w9061.htmlThe police measure that most consistently reduces crime is the arrest rate of those involved in crime, the study finds. Felony arrest rates (except for motor vehicle thefts) rose 50 to 70 percent in the 1990s. When arrests of burglars increased 10 percent, the number of burglaries fell 2.7 to 3.2 percent. When the arrest rate of robbers rose 10 percent, the number of robberies fell 5.7 to 5.9 percent. In the case of murder, the decline was 3.9 to 4 percent; in the case of assault, 2 to 2.4 percent; and for motor vehicle theft, 5 to 5.1 percent.
The contribution of such deterrence measures (the "stick") offers more explanation for the decline in New York City crime than the improvement in the economy, the authors conclude. Between 1990 and 1999, homicide dropped 73 percent, burglary 66 percent, assault 40 percent, robbery 67 percent, and vehicle hoists 73 percent.
