I remember making my pine wood derby car with my Dad. He had to go somewhere for work the weekend of the race. My mom helped me paint it. I wanted to put a confederate flag on like the General Lee. She wouldn't let me so I put an American Flag on it. We got to the derby, and the Pack Leaders own son had the General Lee with the correct flag. I was pissed.

I also won the fucker too. Last heat, both cars lost a wheel. Mine just skidded faster.

Sounds like the 1976 Daytona 500.

Nice design. Reminds me of the one my father made for me. He used lead fishing sinkers melted into the body to ensure proper weight. Took second. Lost by a cunt hair to the douchbag son of the asshole scoutmaster.

Mother pulled me out of scouts shortly after when I came home with a fucking butterfly picture glued to a piece of wood as a scout project. Signed me up for football, cuz she didn't want me to be a pussy. Never got past cub scouts. The rest is history.

My Dad had me drill holes and load it full of lead sinkers too! Is that in the builders instructions?

My hope is to get my sons out after Cub Scouts as well. As was mentioned previously (I think in this thread), a lot of kids do Cub Scouts. Some of the more "interesting" ones move on to Boy Scouts.

The rules are that the car can weigh no more than 5 ounces. You obviously want to get as close to 5 oz as you can for speed. I put ten steel weights in my son's car which brought the car to 4.9 oz with the wheels and axles attached. With the internet at my disposal, I found that you want the weight around the rear axle, so six of the weights were drilled through and place over the rear axle and four were countersunk under the car just in front of the rear axle. I left the extra tenth to account for scale error. I have some steel discs I can glue on to get it right to 5.0 on race day.

Scouts aint for everyone and it's great for some kids. It's a little blurry, but I'm sure I was a handful at that age and scouts was just too "restrictive" for me. My mom, god bless her, figured this out and got me into something that would allow more movement and violence.

I've worked with several Eagle Scouts over the years and they're really good kids.

Your design is genius - low to the ground, little drag. I'll put $20 on your kid to place.

Pretty sure lead weights or sinkers are perfectly legal under most rules. I went the simple route the past two years and just put wood screws with a bunch of washers on the car. My son hasn't won yet (middle son is a Cub Scout this year too) but have had perfectly respectable top 10 finishes two years running. And his design last year (he made the car look like a bobsled, complete with Lego guys) won first place for the design competition.

Can't see the kids stying in Scouts past Cub Scouts (go from Cub to Boy Scout in the Spring of 5th grade where we are) - Boy Scouts just get way too busy with all their trips and other events and sports are just going to keep getting more and more involved. If it's a choice, sports wins over scouting in my house. And yes, the "odd" ones always seem to be the ones moving up in scouting. Needless to say, many of them are not making a decision between sports and scouts. :coffee:

Thanks D. We'll see. Another big part of all of this is wheel alignment. I spent this morning lubing up the axles and hubs with dry graphite (only legal lube in our den) and making sure that the axles were perfectly level and perpendicular to the long axis. Easier said than done. I think she'll be fast, but the proof will be Saturday.

And yes, GF, weights are perfecty legal. They just have to be stationary and not protrude from the bottom of the car.

Andy, the axles are nails. Look just like what you'd hang a small picture on the wall with.

You guys that keep talking about the "good old days", I assure you the kit is exactly the same, at least as it was in the 70s anyway.

Oh. I think of an axle as something going all the way across with wheels on either end.

...and I said "Back in the day" Not good ole days. Don't misquote me mother fucker!

Are you thinking about banning Pinewood Derby car axles?
